About the Opportunity:

The Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) is one of six national mathematical sciences institutes predominantly funded by the National Science Foundation. Each year we bring together approximately 1,000 researchers from around the globe to collaborate on challenging topics within and around the computational domain. ICERM is a dynamic, active environment supported and managed by 14 full time professional staff and 9 directors. ICERM is one of several math institutes funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Launched at Brown University in 2010, the institute’s funding has been renewed by the NSF through 2030. Prior to that date the institute will request renewal for another 5-year grant. This stable cycle of repeat funding in 5-year increments is the typical model for successful NSF-funded math institutes.

Responsibilities:

The Associate Director of IT for ICERM has the responsibility for all IT/technology related operational activities in the institute and oversees all technical development and IT related service offerings. Major roles of responsibility will include IT staff management, ensuring operational security, stability, service development, and continuity of the institute activities; coordination with Brown’s Office of Information Technology and technical community, including  longer-term planning and resource development; and continued awareness of external activities and resources of relevance to the mission of ICERM. Besides support of the scientific activities in the institute, the responsibilities include support of administrative IT and A/V equipment, and development and support of web interfaces and databases necessary for administering ICERM awards. The Associate Director of IT is expected to represent ICERM in institutional IT related committees and networks. All IT staff will report to the Associate Director of IT who reports directly to the Director of ICERM. 

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 8/31/2030 which may be extended based upon available funding.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

• Advanced degree in the sciences or engineering or equivalent experience in a research-oriented environment.  

• 7+ years of IT-related experience

Job Competencies

• Proven record of successfully maintaining and running a diverse computing system in a mixed academic/administrative setting.

• Experience with advanced A/V facilities and video conferencing.

• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

• High professional standards with the ability to effectively manage competing requirements in a diverse user population.

• Familiarity with AI concepts, including machine learning and Large Language Models

• Management experience in a research dominated environment (preferred) Knowledge of the application of scientific computation or visualization techniques in a diverse range of sciences, engineering and related disciplines (preferred).

This position is expected to work occasional night and weekend hours as dictated by ICERM’s event schedule.
