Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities which involve providing training and/or instruction in Assistive Technology including computer access technology for blind and visually impaired adults and transition aged clients.

Typical Functions

The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following:

  • Provide training and instruction regarding technology devices, software programs and basic computer operation to enhance technology skills to clients either on a one-on-one basis or in a lab classroom setting. 

  • Maintain all AT Lab equipment with software updates as needed. 

  • Maintain inventory for all lab equipment. 

  • Assesses levels of achievement and evaluates programs and further needs of clients; as indicated by need, refers clients to other community resources that are equipped to provide further specialized instruction or training.  

  • Maintains records on all participants as to attendance and progress; prepares regular reports for submission to project supervisor.  

Level Descriptor

Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others. 

Level I - This is the basic level of this job family where employees perform professional level work and are primarily responsible for conducting various types of training using existing materials or materials prepared by others or provide assistance to others in the development or preparation of various training courses or programs.

Level II - This is the career level of this job family where employees are assigned full responsibility for developing and conducting various types of training and related activities in assistive technology. This will include preparing any required lesson plans or other materials, conducting classes, workshops or seminars, evaluating participant results, preparing required reports, and other related activities.  

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Level I - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include basic knowledge of assistive technology devices, software programs, and computer operations; of instruction techniques; and of the special problems of the population served.

Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to develop successful training techniques; and to supervise and instruct students.

Level II - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include basic knowledge of assistive technology devices, software programs, and computer operations; of instruction techniques; and of the special problems of the population served.

Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to develop successful training techniques; to supervise and instruct students; and to plan and conduct employee training programs. 

Education and Experience

Level I - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of training, adult education or human resource development for each year of the required education.

Level II - Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of bachelor’s degree plus one year of experience in training, adult education or human resource development or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of training, adult education or human resource development for each year of the required education.

Additional Job Description

Position may be filled at Level I or II.

Position is located in the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Oklahoma City (SBVI90).

Essential Functions: Position is responsible for developing and conducting various types of assistive technology training and the various related activities. This will include preparing any required lesson plans or other materials, conducting classes, workshops or seminars, evaluating participant results, preparing required reports, and other related activities. This position will also be responsible for maintaining technology equipment in the AT Labs and ensuring that they are in working order, and that all pertinent software updates are performed on a regular basis. In addition, this position will maintain a list of all AT Lab equipment and its location, including any equipment that may be returned, repossessed or loaned. This position will maintain training records on each participant and will report progress and/or issues regularly to the Programs Manager.

Applicant must be willing to perform all job-related travel.   

Trial period (if applicable) is required.
