About This Opportunity  

The University of Queensland is seeking an experienced Aquatic Technical Coordinator to play a pivotal role in supervising staff and coordinating the day-to-day delivery of high-quality Aquatic animal husbandry and research support services within a complex, regulated research environment. This position will require a working knowledge of aquaculture systems, ability to participate in routine operations (including rostered weekend and afterhours On-Call support), provision of technical leadership across aquatic laboratory animal operations, support for research project planning, and the highest standards of animal welfare, biosafety, and regulatory compliance. Working closely with researchers, students, and technical staff, you will combine hands-on aquaculture expertise with supervision and training responsibilities, contributing directly to the success of cutting-edge research and the safe, efficient operation of specialised research facilities.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Provide on-the-ground technical support for routine tasks and coordinate dynamic schedules across complex facilities (facilitating husbandry, animal health, service delivery and team development)

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands, ability to work efficiently and independently in line with Standard Operation Procedures and achieve deadlines.

  • Support effective facility operation through collaboration with management on service delivery, staff supervision, training and operational procedure development

  • Deliver expert Aquatic animal husbandry and technical research support, including the support of breeding programs, advanced procedures, animal welfare and regulatory compliance.

  • Participate in regular rostered weekend and on-call shifts (average 2 per month).

About You

  • A relevant degree (e.g. animal science) or substantial specialist experience within the animal technology or research sector, with the ability to operate effectively in complex research environments.

  • Ability to support teams across highly regulated facilities, with well-developed problem-solving skills and adaptability within dynamic environments. Experience supervising, training, and mentoring staff or students, with a collaborative approach to building capability and maintaining high operational standards.

  • Demonstrated commitment to best-practice animal welfare, husbandry, biosafety, and biosecurity, supported by sound knowledge of regulatory and ethical frameworks.

  • Proven experience drafting and following Standard Operating Procedures, including accurate record keeping and compliance-driven data management.

  • Hands-on technical capability, including experience with euthanasia and exposure to advanced animal procedures, considered advantageous.
