The Analytical Chemist for chemical and rocket motor manufacturing is responsible for quality control and chemical testing of incoming raw materials, in-process oxidizers, and final composite materials per MILSPEC standards, while establishing new analytical chemistry capabilities and driving test method development.

The position reports to the Chemical Lab Manager and is part of the Chemical Lab based in Pueblo, CO. This role is onsite based in Pueblo, CO.

In this role, the essential functions are:

  • Execute chemical and physical tests per MILSPEC standards for incoming raw materials, in-process oxidizers, and final composite materials; generate Certificates of Analysis (CoAs) for final acceptance testing.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new chemical production processes, sampling methods, and test procedures.
  • Perform mechanical property, thermal stability, raw material, and particle size analyses in support of rocket motor manufacturing.
  • Assist with selection of equipment to support expansion of rocket motor manufacturing lab capabilities.
  • Manage sample chain of custody and traceability from incoming inspection through final disposition.
  • Record, document, and analyze experimental data; prepare technical reports, CoAs, and presentations summarizing findings.
  • Develop, write, and maintain laboratory SOPs, test worksheets, and batch records in accordance with quality system requirements.
  • Cooperate with government scientists to support updates and revisions to MILSPEC procedures; assist in calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment while adhering to safety protocols.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field with 3-4 years of experience in an analytical laboratory environment OR Master's degree in Chemistry or a related field with 1-2 years of experience
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation including ICP-OES, load frame, bomb calorimeter, gravimetric analysis, and related equipment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing multiple tasks, conducting experiments, and recording data
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
  • Previously participated in safety reviews for chemical testing and processes, including experience working with oxidizers or other energetic or hazardous materials
  • Experience writing and maintaining quality documentation including SOPs, test worksheets, and batch records
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for sample tracking and data management
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain State and Federal explosives licenses (must be 21 years of age or older, pass pre-employment drug test, and pass State and Federal background checks)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in an analytical laboratory environment

Travel, Physical and/or Government Mandated Requirements:

  • Travel may be expected between our Penrose and Pueblo, CO locations.
  • Ability to lift, move or carry items or equipment up to 50 pounds.

The good faith base salary range for this role is $55,000-$70,000 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base salary only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future.
