Overview

Are you an aviation safety engineer looking for varied, high-impact work across military air systems? Do you want to broaden your airworthiness and certification experience while building a long-term career in a supportive technical community?

We’re expanding our defence air safety capability. Join us and support the certification, airworthiness and safe operation of aircraft, mission systems, upgrades and supporting organisations, while retaining opportunities to collaborate across our wider defence safety capability.

AtkinsRéalis is a world-class engineering services and nuclear organisation delivering complex and critical programmes across defence, aerospace, nuclear and other highly regulated sectors.

Join our established Safety & Environmental Assurance community; knowledge sharing and collaboration are at the heart of what we do. You’ll benefit from:

  • Formal technical assurance, peer review and access to experienced air safety and airworthiness specialists.
  • Domain Communities of Interest and professional networks.
  • Regular team meetings, knowledge-sharing events and informal mentoring.
  • Career development support aligned wherever possible to your experience, interests and goals.

We aim to align assignments with your skills, interests and career goals while balancing client and business needs. We welcome applicants with relevant military or civil aviation experience, including those from the Armed Forces, MOD, industry and those returning after a career break. Assignments could include:

  • Military aircraft and mission-system safety, including rotary-wing, fixed-wing and surveillance platforms.
  • Airworthiness, certification and safety-management support for new capability, upgrades and in-service change.
  • Safety assessment reports, accident and risk models, hazard analysis and air-system safety arguments.
  • Digitalisation and improvement of aviation safety processes and evidence.

Your role

You will support air safety, airworthiness and certification activities across the lifecycle of military and, where relevant, civil aviation systems. You will help turn regulatory, design and operational information into clear safety evidence that supports certification, modification, continued operation and informed airworthiness decisions.

  • Support the development, maintenance and assurance of Air System Safety Cases, Type Airworthiness Safety Assessments, Safety Assessment Reports and Safety Management Plans.
  • Develop and maintain hazard logs and support the assessment and management of Equipment Contribution to Risk to Life.
  • Produce and update safety arguments, evidence registers and supporting assessments, applying techniques such as FHA, ZHA, FTA, ETA, FMECA and Bow Tie analysis where appropriate.
  • Support the application of ASPIRE and Air Engineer’s Toolkit processes to safety assessment, type airworthiness, certification and in-service change.
  • Assess the safety and airworthiness implications of new capability, equipment integration, modifications and changes in use or configuration.
  • Support airworthiness and safety governance through working groups, reviews and engagement with Delivery Teams, operators, airworthiness specialists and assurance stakeholders.
  • Produce clear technical reports and safety evidence that support certification, acceptance, Release to Service recommendations and continued safe operation.

About you

Essential experience and attributes

  • Relevant experience delivering safety engineering or safety assurance in a defence or civil aviation environment, including contributing to safety cases, safety assessments, hazard logs or structured risk-management activities.
  • Working knowledge of aviation safety, airworthiness, certification, engineering or operations.
  • An understanding of systems engineering and the engineering lifecycle, with the ability to analyse technical information and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A collaborative, curious and delivery-focused approach, with the confidence to ask questions and seek support when needed.
  • A relevant degree, aviation qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience gained in defence, the Armed Forces or industry.

Desirable experience

  • Understanding of the Military Aviation Authority Regulatory Publications, ASPIRE or the Air Engineer’s Toolkit.
  • Experience supporting Air System Safety Cases, Type Airworthiness Safety Assessments, Safety Assessment Reports, Equipment Contribution to Risk to Life assessments or Safety Management Plans.
  • Experience applying relevant techniques such as FHA, ZHA, FTA, ETA, FMECA, Bow Tie analysis, GSN or CAE.
  • Professional registration, or active progress towards IEng or CEng, and membership of a relevant institution such as the IET, SaRS, IMechE, IExpE or RAeS.
