About this Senior Backend Engineer (Node.Js) role at Josys
About Josys
Josys is a modern AI-native identity security and governance platform. Enterprise AI adoption has made identity the fastest-growing attack surface, and the hardest to govern. Josys discovers, governs, and secures every identity, human, machine, and AI agent, across every application in the enterprise, allowing security and IT teams to surface risk, control access, and remediate identity threats in real-time.
Trusted by over 1,000 organizations and MSPs worldwide, Josys turns identity from the fastest-growing attack surface into an autonomously governed advantage.

About The Role
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong hands-on Node.js experience to join our backend engineering team.
Node.js will be the primary technology focus for this role. You will build and maintain backend services, APIs, and scalable systems while working closely with product and engineering teams.
Our backend environment includes both Node.js and Ruby on Rails. You do not need prior Rails experience to be successful in this role, but you should be comfortable learning Rails and contributing to existing Rails services as you grow into the role.
We are looking for a strong individual contributor with good engineering fundamentals, practical system design experience, and the ability to take ownership of backend projects from development through production.
What We're Looking For
3–7 years of backend software development experience, with strong hands-on experience using Node.js. Exceptionally strong candidates with ~2 years of experience may also be considered.
Strong proficiency in JavaScript and/or TypeScript.
Hands-on experience building and maintaining production-grade backend services and REST APIs.
Strong understanding of backend architecture, asynchronous programming, object-oriented programming, and software engineering fundamentals.
Experience working with databases, data modelling, and writing efficient queries.
Experience with background jobs, queues, asynchronous processing, or event-driven systems.
Comfortable working on existing codebases and contributing independently with minimal hand-holding.
Ability to participate in system design discussions and reason through architecture, scalability, performance, reliability, and technical trade-offs.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate and resolve production issues.
Genuine, hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor or similar tools. Candidates should be able to explain how they use AI for development, debugging, testing, code review, and improving productivity.
Strong ownership of previous projects, with the ability to explain their actual technical contribution in depth.
Exposure to cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Good To Have
Ruby on Rails experience.
Experience with Rails background processing tools such as Sidekiq, Resque, ActiveJob, or Shoryuken.
Experience working across multiple backend languages or frameworks.
Experience with microservices and distributed systems.
Experience with AWS services and cloud-native architecture.
Familiarity with front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Experience with automated testing and CI/CD practices.
Mindset We Value
Willingness to learn: You don't need to know Rails today, but you should be comfortable picking it up and working across different technologies.
Strong IC mindset: You can take ownership, navigate an existing codebase, and start contributing quickly.
Engineering fundamentals: We value people who understand why something should be built a certain way, not just how to implement it.
Problem-solving: You are comfortable working through ambiguous technical problems and finding practical solutions.
Customer focus: You understand that backend engineering ultimately impacts product reliability and customer experience.
AI-native development: You actively use AI tools to make yourself more effective while still maintaining strong engineering judgment and code quality.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, and deploy backend services primarily using Node.js.
Build and maintain scalable, secure, and reliable REST APIs.
Work with databases and backend infrastructure to deliver high-performing services.
Contribute to system architecture and technical design decisions.
Work across our backend stack and gradually contribute to Ruby on Rails services as required.
Debug and resolve technical issues across development and production environments.
Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
Participate in code reviews and help maintain strong engineering standards.
Collaborate with product managers, designers, frontend engineers, and other backend engineers.
Contribute to technical estimations, sprint planning, and prioritization.
Work with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, and contribute to improving scalability, availability, and security.
Use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to improve development speed, code quality, testing, and problem-solving.
Stay current with relevant backend technologies and contribute ideas that improve engineering practices and team productivity.
