Who we are:
Mama Money is a growth-stage fintech on a mission to improve the financial lives of migrants and underserved communities across Africa and beyond. What started in 2015 as a cross-border payments service has grown into a multi-product financial platform — giving people the tools to send, save, and manage money on their own terms, at a socially fair price. Payments were just the beginning; today Mama Money is building the fuller financial toolkit our customers need, all under one roof.
Mama HQ is in beautiful Cape Town. We're 159 people strong (and counting), representing 19 countries across Africa, Asia, the UK, and Europe. Everything we build is in service of people who deserve better — and our culture reflects that same commitment. We've had good times and tough times, but the focus never shifts: people over profit, always.
We're looking for a Junior Designer who's fresh out of university and hungry to build a career in design. This is an entry-level role — we're not expecting a packed portfolio of client work, just strong fundamentals, a good eye, and genuine enthusiasm for learning. You'll work closely with our product, marketing, and brand teams to bring ideas to life across digital and print.
This is a great opportunity for someone who wants hands-on mentorship, real ownership from day one, and the chance to grow inside a fast-moving fintech.
What you'll actually be doing:
Support the design team on digital assets for the Mama Money app, website, and social channels
Assist with marketing collateral — campaigns, banners, presentations, and promotional material
Help maintain and apply our brand guidelines consistently across touchpoints
Contribute fresh ideas and creative concepts in brainstorms and reviews
Prepare and format design files for handover to developers or print
Take feedback well and iterate quickly on design drafts
What you bring:
A relevant qualification (or about to graduate) in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Digital Design, or similar
A portfolio showcasing university projects, personal work, or freelance pieces — we want to see how you think, not just polished output
Working knowledge of design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator) and/or Figma
A strong eye for typography, colour, layout, and visual storytelling
Curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn on the job
Good communication skills and the ability to take direction and feedback constructively
Basic understanding of UI/UX principles
Exposure to motion graphics or basic video editing
An interest in fintech, financial inclusion, or the remittance space
Your first 90 days:
In your first 90 days, you'll spend time getting familiar with the Mama Money brand, tools, and team workflows while shadowing the design team on live projects and picking up smaller tasks.
From there, you'll start taking ownership of your own briefs — producing marketing collateral, collaborating directly with stakeholders, and building confidence in contributing ideas
Why Mama?
We build products that help people do more with their money — from sending money home, to saving, to accessing money in ways that feel safe and simple. The work matters because it helps real people in real ways, every single day.
We're not afraid to give things a go, and we take ownership of what we do. We keep learning, support each other, and stay focused on what matters most. If you're after meaningful work and a team that genuinely cares about what they're building — this could be your next move.
Mama's values:
- Making it easier for customers
- Give it a go
- Just own it
