About The Role

Nature Human Behaviour is an online-only, monthly journal that publishes research of outstanding significance into any aspect of individual or collective human behaviour. The journal has a strong multidisciplinary identity (encompassing research across the social, biological, health, and physical sciences) and places a strong emphasis on rigorous scientific practices.

Do you love science but feel that an academic career isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about scientific research? Do you enjoy reading papers outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any or all these questions, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the Nature Portfolio editorial team.

To help us build on the success of the portfolio, we’re seeking an editor with expertise in computational science or any of the social sciences. We are particularly interested in candidates with a multidisciplinary background, strong quantitative skills, and broad interests in human behaviour research, as the role involves engaging with research in multiple diverse disciplines across the social and natural sciences.

This is a permanent position within the Nature Portfolio. The successful candidate will primarily support Nature Human Behaviour and may collaborate closely with other Nature Portfolio journals as needed. Please note that responsibilities and journal assignments may evolve over time in response to portfolio needs.

The responsibilities include:

  • Assess research manuscripts for quality, strength of scientific advance and suitability, and oversee the peer review process.
  • Commission and edit opinion and review content for the journal’s magazine section.
  • Work closely with authors and reviewers to ensure a rigorous and constructive editorial process.
  • Engage with the scientific community and attract strong submissions through conference attendance, site visits and other forms of outreach.
  • Promote published research by producing content for press releases and social media.
  • Contribute to editorial policies and processes and help maintain high standards of scientific integrity.
  • Work with the Chief Editor and the rest of the editorial team to develop the journal’s strategy.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Nature Portfolio and contribute to the wider editorial community.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a field related to computational science or any of the quantitative social sciences.
  • Additional research experience valuable but not needed.
  • A thorough understanding of recent trends and developments in the field is essential.
  • A passion for science and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your speciality.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent English (written and spoken).
  • The ability to read and assess the contribution, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different disciplines.
  • Be eager to travel and meet scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.
  • Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with editorial experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for Senior Editor positions.

The successful candidates will report to the Chief Editor of the journal.

This demanding and intellectually stimulating role is in either of our Shanghai, Beijing, Berlin or Madrid offices. The position is offered on a permanent basis and its starting date is envisaged as soon as possible.

Applicants should include a CV, a covering letter explaining their interest in the position, preferred office of employment, and a separate file with a concise discussion (500 words maximum) of recent scientific developments in human behaviour research which you have found particularly exciting (stating why).

Candidates will be considered as they apply.
