Teaching Faculty II

Job Summary:

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison—the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System—invites applications for a World Languages Teaching Faculty position within our innovative secondary teacher preparation program. Housed in a top-ranked department known for its research-based initial educator licensing, our program engages teacher candidates through practice-based field experiences in local classrooms and community-based educational spaces. As our campus sits on ancestral Ho-Chunk land—a place known as Teejop since time immemorial—we respect the inherent sovereignty of the 12 First Nations in Wisconsin. Our teacher education programs actively integrate and honor these legacies of resistance and resilience as part of our ongoing commitment to shaping an equitable educational future.

We are seeking a dynamic educator to provide leadership for our World Language Education (WLE) program and mentor pre-service candidates across a range of target languages.

This is a 12-month academic staff, non-tenure-track position with an anticipated part-time to full-time appointment. The core portfolio centers on World Language Education; appointments exceeding 50% FTE will include teaching additional courses across the teacher education program that aligns with the candidate’s professional expertise and program needs.

The Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) assignment for this position may fluctuate between 50% and 100%, based on programming needs, budget considerations, and the number of courses assigned.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching & Instruction: Teach world language education course(s) in the content pedagogical series, with potential opportunities to teach additional courses across the teacher education program.
  • Supervision & Mentorship: Supervise teacher candidates in their field placements and manage and mentor field supervisors in their work with students and cooperating teachers.
  • Program Leadership & Administration: Lead WLE program planning, implementation, and overall cohort progress management—including the application process for incoming candidates and certification/degree completion for graduating cohorts.
  • Partnership Building: Develop and maintain sustainable, collaborative relationships with cooperating teachers and local school partners.
  • Recruitment & Continuous Improvement: Direct strategic recruiting initiatives to engage, enroll, and support a diverse applicant pool, and collaborate with coordinators across other secondary content areas to assess and improve the overall program and contribute to state and university review processes.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Works with faculty to identify and develop new methods of advancing instruction in the discipline
  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of these techniques
  • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • Assists in development of grant proposals for funding of model instruction programs
  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • May make presentations to faculty and to staff members on instructional programs and techniques
