Job Description Summary

This position is responsible for planning and facilitating no-fail studio art lessons at the Museum for approximately 6-10 hours per week for approximately 32 weeks of the year. While this position primarily facilitates workshops in conjunction with guided field trips, it may also assist with art activities for programs beyond guided field trips, including annual Community Day festivals, Reynolda on the House workshops, and occasionally monthly family workshops. Enthusiastically teaches students of all ages, including adults and individuals with disabilities. Demonstrates care and attention to individual and group needs. Additionally assists with some administrative tasks of the department, specifically data input and contract creation and sharing for group tours at Reynolda.

Please Note: This position's teaching work will be carried out on-site at Reynolda. Some preparatory work will also happen on-site, though planning and data input can occur remotely.

Job Description

Essential Functions: 

  • Teaches (typically) 30-minute art activities to K-12 students and adults that connect to Reynolda’s collections and history, managing time well.  Lessons may repeat within a group’s visit to accommodate everyone. Available 1-4 mornings per week for tours, as scheduled, and occasional afternoons with advance consultation.

  • Prepares materials, sets up, and cleans up from studio programs, which includes also mounting completed, dry artwork when relevant then coordinating the return of art to the group.

  • Helps maintain order of materials and cleanliness in classroom and storage space. 

  • Works closely with the Director of Teaching and Learning to plan activities and art supply needs. Coordinates with Manager of Community and Academic Learning for art project support for occasional evening and weekend programs.

  • Engages students with various abilities, interests, and learning styles. Inspires creativity by fostering belonging in an encouraging learning environment.

  • Inspires and encourages participants to exercise their individual creativity, making accommodations when necessary. 

  • Assists with administrative portions of tour booking for all group tours to Reynolda by inputting group data and visit itinerary into the Altru point of sale system, creating a contract for the group, and sharing the contract via prepared email templates. Assists with tracking of contracts and payment from groups. 

  • Supervises volunteer assistants in the classroom.

Other Functions:

  • Researches the works in the Museum’s collections that support the lessons or activities to develop an accurate understanding of Reynolda’s history as both a private estate and as an institution for higher learning.

  • Ensures safe usage and storage of art materials and tools.

  • Understands, enforces, and abides by museum guidelines and safety protocols.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in visual arts, art education, or related field OR at least 2 years relevant work experience

  • Experience teaching art with primary school-age children (2+ years)

  • Expertise in various art-making techniques and instruction

  • Strong communication skills, excellence in managing and interacting with groups of people

  • Competency with Microsoft Word, Google mail and PC-based computing.

  • Attention to detail in written communication

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus, but not required

  • Experience teaching secondary students and individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities

  • Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and Altru a plus, but on-the-job training provided

Accountabilities: 

  • Responsible for own work

  • Supervises volunteers assisting in their classroom

Physical Requirements:

  • Bending, reaching, coordinated bilateral movements to use paper cutter etc., removing and returning items from shelves and cabinets of different heights and depths (using a step stool or short ladder occasionally)

  • Speaking clearly and understandably to a whole classroom over the course of two hours

  • Sitting, standing, or leaning in order to be near students’ and their artwork

  • Seeing student activity across a room and artwork from nearby

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds

  • Computer-based work requiring typing and clicking, and frequently switching between applications, approximately 1-3 hours per week (can be executed in 15-30 minute chunks)

Environmental Conditions: 

  • Indoor mostly with some outdoor instruction
