The role  

We are looking for an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Innovation team and help develop Oceanbird’s next generation of wind-powered propulsion systems for commercial vessels.  

In this role, you will be responsible for the structural integrity and design of large, complex structures, from early concepts through detailed design and verification. You will combine engineering fundamentals and hand calculations with advanced finite element analysis to understand structural behaviour, identify critical design drivers, and develop robust and cost-efficient solutions. Your structural expertise will directly influence how our products are designed, manufactured, tested, and operated.  

The role is highly hands-on but also requires a strong system-level perspective. You will need to understand not only how an individual component behaves, but how the complete product functions and interacts with its operational environment.   

Key responsibilities  

• Perform structural calculations ranging from hand calculations and analytical methods to advanced FEA.  

• Develop, assess, and document structural designs from concept through detailed design, testing, and verification in close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across mechanical, automation control, electrical, supply chain and quality, and customer projects.  

• Take a system-level approach to understanding loads, boundary conditions, interfaces, operational environments, and failure modes.  

• Prepare and peer-review structural calculation reports and documentation.  

• Apply relevant design standards and class rules, such as DNV requirements.  

• Evaluate alternative design solutions regarding structural performance, manufacturability, weight, complexity, and cost.  

• Develop and maintain expertise in one or more specialist areas of structural engineering, such as fatigue, welding, bolted joints, dynamics, buckling, composite/steel structures, or structural optimisation.  

• Communicate structural risks, assumptions, and design recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.  

• Contribute to design reviews, testing, verification activities, and continuous improvement of our engineering methods and processes.  

What we are looking for  

We believe the right candidate combines strong structural engineering fundamentals with a proven track record of delivering projects from concept to field-proven solutions.   

You likely have:   

• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in structural engineering or a closely related field.  

• A master’s degree in structural engineering, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, aerospace engineering, or a similar discipline.  

• Strong understanding of structural mechanics and engineering fundamentals.  

• Practical experience with linear and non-linear finite element analysis; experience with ANSYS is highly desirable.   

• Python programming experience is a plus.   

• Experience designing and dimensioning large steel structures is highly desirable.  

• Experience with marine, offshore, shipbuilding, heavy machinery, energy, or other highly regulated structural applications is an advantage.  

• Experience working with DNV standards or other marine classification society rules is highly desirable.  

• A sound understanding of how engineering decisions affect the business case of the product.   

• Fluent professional English, both written and spoken.
