ICON is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to serve as a senior technical engineer on the regulatory team, building on the technical foundation of ICON's regulatory acceptance program for its 3D-printed building systems. Reporting to the Director of Building Regulatory Affairs, this role independently structures the acceptance case for ICON's complex and precedent-limited technical questions, turning code requirements and test data into the substantiated technical positions ICON's acceptance depends on, and serves as a technical resource the rest of the regulatory team relies on for its hardest calls. This role is based at ICON's Austin, TX campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Serve as a senior technical engineer on the regulatory team, independently structuring the acceptance case for complex, non-standard product questions across code-requirement translation, test plan review, test data analysis, evaluation-report authorship, and QC oversight; serve as the technical resource other regulatory engineers rely on for difficult acceptance calls.
• Translate building code acceptance requirements, including ICC-ES AC509, UFC, IBC/IRC, and ASTM/ACI/ASCE, into technical code requirements for product development and testing, including for novel or precedent-limited product questions where established approaches don't directly apply.
• Own the regulatory-side review and approval of test plans, specimen designs, and test matrices for standard and complex  campaigns, and advise other regulatory engineers on test-plan review approach; coordinate with the Product Development testing team that executes and owns the testing function.
• Independently author the engineering analyses, calculations, and evaluation-report content that substantiate acceptance for complex or precedent-adjacent cases. Lead the technical case-building when a new pathway or product approval is needed, involving department leadership only on the most novel matters.
• Define the quality-control outcomes and requirements for regulatory acceptance of ICON's additive concrete construction and building products, serving as the technical reference other ICON teams consult as they develop and implement their QC processes.
• Manage third party review relationships, including ICC-ES. Lead the planning and presenting at the semiannual inspections, and sustain that relationship through ongoing work and acceptance criteria development.
• Independently analyze complex, ambiguous, or multi-source data from the regulatory technical database, including material and structural testing data, and draw conclusions that hold up under agency scrutiny; contribute analysis that informs code- and standards-development, connecting test data to the engineering behind code equations, limit states, and acceptance criteria.
• Support the technical analysis, drafting, and reporting for code- and standards-development and policy work that advances ICON's positions.
• Serve as the primary technical resource sector leads and the applications team escalate to for difficult acceptance and regulatory questions; resolve nearly all independently, reserving escalation to leadership for the rare precedent-setting matter, and advise less experienced regulatory engineers on diagnostic approach and technical communication.
• Maintain deep command of the codes, standards, and acceptance frameworks central to ICON's regulatory work, with working range across adjacent standards, serving as an internal reference other engineers consult on framework questions.
• Other duties and special projects as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related technical discipline
• 6+ years of relevant professional experience in structural engineering, including design, testing, forensic engineering, or building product evaluation
• Strong understanding of structural engineering from first principles, including mechanics of materials, structural analysis, and design fundamentals
• Demonstrated experience with the building codes and standards that govern structural acceptance (e.g., IBC/IRC, ACI, ASCE, ASTM) and of how test evidence is used to demonstrate code compliance
• Practical design and/or testing experience with concrete and masonry structural systems and materials
• Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret structural and material test data using engineering principles and statistical methods, and to draw defensible technical conclusions from it
• Strong technical writing skills, with demonstrated ability to prepare the reports, calculations, and substantiating documentation that support technical and regulatory decisions
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, with proven ability to manage multiple concurrent efforts independently

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Experience connecting engineering evidence to code compliance or regulatory acceptance, for example, evaluation reports, code-compliance substantiation, or standards-based qualification
• Direct experience with ICC-ES evaluation reports and acceptance criteria (e.g., AC509) or comparable product-evaluation pathways
• Graduate degree in structural engineering or a related technical discipline
• Professional Engineer (PE) license, or active progress toward one
• Understanding of concrete material science, including mix design, curing, and fresh and hardened properties
• Hands-on experience with structural testing equipment and data acquisition
• Experience defining or evaluating quality-control requirements in a manufacturing, construction, or product-certification setting
• Experience representing an organization's technical position with standards bodies, code officials, or third-party accreditation agencies
• Familiarity with 3D printing, additive manufacturing, or advanced construction methods
