Hartford Fire Ins. Co. is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Software Engineer focused on AI-driven engineering efficiency. This hybrid role will work across multiple application teams to improve developer productivity, code quality, CI/CD processes, and operational maturity. The engineer will develop production-ready automation, modernize Java applications, integrate AI-assisted development tools, and establish reusable engineering practices across the organization.
This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Responsibilities
* Partner with multiple application teams to identify technical debt, productivity bottlenecks, and automation opportunities.
* Develop production-ready solutions that improve build performance, automated testing, deployment reliability, and developer experience.
* Evaluate and integrate AI development tools such as GitHub Copilot, LLM APIs, and custom AI solutions.
* Build AI-powered utilities, including code review bots, test generators, documentation tools, and pull request summarizers.
* Optimize CI/CD pipelines for Java and Spring Boot microservices deployed on AWS ECS.
* Implement automated quality gates, security scanning, dependency checks, and performance regression testing.
* Modernize Java and Spring Boot applications by refactoring legacy code and improving architectural consistency.
* Enhance application observability through improved logging, tracing, monitoring, and operational instrumentation.
* Improve PostgreSQL performance through query optimization, indexing, schema design, and standardized database practices.
* Create reusable engineering patterns, shared libraries, and internal tools that can be adopted across teams.
* Promote AI-assisted engineering practices and provide guidance on effective prompt engineering and development workflows.
Qualifications
* 12+ years of hands-on Java development experience with deep expertise in Java 17+, Spring Boot, Spring Data, and RESTful API design.
* Proven ability to quickly understand complex codebases and associated business processes.
* Strong PostgreSQL experience, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and schema design.
* Hands-on knowledge of AWS services, including ECS, ECR, CloudWatch, RDS, S3, and IAM.
* Experience designing, building, and optimizing CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline, or equivalent tools.
* Proficiency with Docker and containerized deployments using AWS ECS.
* Familiarity with Angular and TypeScript, including the ability to review code and implement targeted improvements.
* Strong knowledge of Git workflows, branching strategies, pull request practices, code reviews, and conflict resolution.
* Experience integrating AI or machine learning tools into software development workflows is preferred.
* Experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, observability platforms, OWASP practices, and automated security scanning is preferred.
* Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills, with the ability to work independently across remote teams.

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
