Your Opportunity

Permanent Full-Time Position | GTA, ON (Hybrid)

Are you energized by the opportunity to shape the commercial performance of a growing power portfolio and contribute to Capital Power's net zero ambitions?

We are seeking a strategic, commercially savvy Senior Commercial Asset Manager to join our Commercial Management team. Reporting to the Vice President, Commercial (Canada East), you will play a critical role in maximizing the value of our generation assets by identifying and executing opportunities, managing commercial risk, and developing strategies that enhance long-term performance.

As the commercial lead for assigned assets, you will be responsible for protecting and optimizing asset value through proactive risk management, commercial negotiations, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning. You will partner closely with Operations, Trading, Regulatory, Finance, Legal, Environmental, and Business Development teams to drive commercial outcomes and support the success of Capital Power's broader portfolio.

This is an exciting opportunity to influence key business decisions, lead complex negotiations, manage strategic relationships, and contribute directly to the performance and growth of our fleet.

You will contribute to our team by

  • Leading and coordinating internal subject matter expert teams for the commercial management and optimization of value for the assigned asset and the generation fleet.
  • Steering interaction with appropriate subject matter experts (operations, legal, credit, regulatory, finance, environmental, external suppliers, off-takers, and regulators) on commercial activities that generate revenue, reduce cost, or reduce and/or mitigate risks and/or provide opportunities for improving value.
  • Conducting the negotiation of commercial contracts with external third parties for supply of key facility inputs and sale of products and services – e.g. PPAs, , long-term service agreements.
  • Independently coordinating and retaining relationships with external stakeholders and partners, working in consultation with internal stakeholders.
  • Identifying and analyzing a variety of opportunities with respect to the current or future commercial management and operation of the asset(s), including monitoring and assessing the external environment for trends, threats, or opportunities, including developing action strategies by leading and coordinating activities with internal stakeholders to address, optimize, and mitigate such trends, threats and / or opportunities.
  • Providing commercial support to facility managers on operating and capital investment issues to preserve or improve the value of the facility.
  • Making recommendations and leading efforts to resolve and handle issues or disputes with counterparties and partners by serving as a primary contact on such issues to resolve disputes.  
  • Leading and/or reporting on opportunities, challenges and/or issues at regular stakeholder meetings.
  • Proactively handling and ensuring compliance with all related commercial agreements.
  • Leading to completion ad-hoc special projects or initiatives for specific assets, or common initiatives across all assets, as applicable.
  • Managing commercial reporting and commercial management functions with asset partners.
  • Participating in the evaluation of new assets/opportunities identified by Business Development for acquisition or greenfield/brownfield development.

What you will bring to the role  

Education:

  • Degree in engineering, business, economics, or related field. 
  • Master’s or working toward master’s an asset.
  • A professional designation is considered an asset.

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of experience in an operational, commercial, engineering, business development, or financial and analytical roles; preferably in the deregulated electricity industry or other related industry.
  • 5+ years of experience in P&L including variance reporting.  Reasonable understanding of accounting and transaction flows through the financials.
  • Knowledge/experience with respect to power markets, power generation, power marketing, regulatory, commodities and related agreements, transmission/transport and related agreements and power purchase agreements is preferred. 
  • Specific experience with the Ontario IESO administered market would be an asset

Technical & Other Skills:

  • Deep understanding and experience in power markets, electricity generating plants, and plant operations
  • Experience working with complex legal agreements or contracts.
  • Commercial management or negotiating experience.
  • Reasonable levels of financial analysis skills, familiarity with financial statements, budgets, forecasting and development of asset earnings profiles.
  • Proficient in contract review and negotiations.
  • Project management experience and ability to interface with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability for travel in Eastern Canada  to plant sites
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Takes initiative, ability to deal with ambiguity and conflict and ability to exercise influence.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Capable of making sound decisions of an independent nature.
  • Provide recommendations to Senior Management to resolve issues in a proactive manner that benefits the interests of Capital Power.

Working Conditions:

  • Location: GTA, ON (Brampton ON alternatively)
  • Position allows for hybrid work schedule
  • Periodic travel to locations across Ontario will be required.
