The New York Times · Hybrid · New York, NY

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role:

Wirecutter, the product review and shopping guide arm of The New York Times Company, is looking for an experienced Senior Engineering Manager for Wirecutter's Growth team. You will lead the engineers who build experiences that grow and strengthen our direct relationship with readers. The team's work includes search discovery, registration, newsletters, and distribution across The New York Times and other platforms. This role reports to the Wirecutter VP of Engineering.

Every year, Wirecutter reaches millions of users and drives billions of dollars in sales for our merchant partners. Through rigorous testing, research, and reporting across hundreds of merchants, our dedication to helping people find the best products remains as relevant today as it did over ten years ago. We deliver human-generated, straightforward recommendations that inspire readers while saving them time, effort, and money.

Hybrid work (from home and in-office) is preferred for this role, although full-time remote applicants will also be considered. As a hybrid employee, you can typically expect to come into our New York City headquarters two days each week.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead five to ten front-end engineers at a range of career levels

  • Coach and mentor individual contributors and emerging managers to build high-performing teams

  • Motivate engineers to excel through regular feedback, recognition, career development, and an inclusive environment

  • Own execution, staffing, technical health, and operational practices

  • Ensure technical decisions have clear accountability and align with Wirecutter's broader technical strategy

  • Partner with Product, Design, and Data team members to shape the roadmap and translate business goals into technical strategies and measurable engineering outcomes

  • Collaborate with teams across Wirecutter and The NY Times to manage dependencies and deliver shared initiatives

  • Communicate plans, progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to technical and nontechnical partners and senior stakeholders

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of engineering management experience, including hiring, developing and retaining engineers, and building teams where people do their best work

  • Expertise in front-end web development, operating production software, and contemporary software delivery practices

  • Experience managing senior engineers and partnering with staff-level engineers and other senior technical leaders

  • Proven experience translating product and business goals into engineering outcomes and make thoughtful tradeoffs and decisions with cross-organizational impact, handling multiple stakeholders/initiatives

  • Fluency with AI-assisted software development and its use in engineering workflows

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Typescript, React and GraphQL, and site performance optimization

  • Experience with experimentation platforms, A/B testing, or other data-informed product development practices

  • Experience collaborating with Data or Analytics teams in a commercial, metrics-driven environment

  • Familiarity with web accessibility, SEO, or emerging search and discovery technologies

  • Experience shipping or leading the adoption of an AI-powered workflow change within a team
