The opportunity:
The Change Delivery team shapes and leads the end-to-end delivery of our strategic programmes and operational change priorities in collaboration with business teams and IT. The team currently comprises of three main capabilities – business analysis, programme/project management and portfolio management office.

This role sits at the intersection of business and technology, with responsibility for understanding business needs, shaping requirements and solutions, and supporting the delivery of change across the insurance value chain.

 

The successful candidate will engage with senior team members from Underwriting, Claims, Finance, and Operations. They will play a key role in addressing complex challenges and enhancing Markel's overall capability. The role requires a strong investigative attitude to understand and challenge requirements and support business growth ambitions.

 

The Senior Business Analyst will report to a Lead Business Analyst in Change Delivery. They will work closely with relevant business teams to define process changes and requirements for various projects. They will then work to deliver these changes to the business, supporting solutioning, development, testing and adoption.

 

What you’ll be doing:

Business Analysis & Requirements

• Elicit, analyse and document business requirements using a range of techniques, including workshops, interviews and process modelling.
• Perform end-to-end analysis of business processes and systems to identify challenges, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
• Investigate and assess solution options, working with business leaders and technology teams to deliver new products, processes and solutions.
• Translate business needs into detailed user stories, functional specifications and acceptance criteria.

 

Stakeholder Engagement

• Act as a trusted partner to teams across underwriting, claims, finance, actuarial and operations, understanding their objectives and challenges.
• Collaborate with senior partners to understand business questions and translate them into practical, well-defined solutions.
• Challenge assumptions constructively and help stakeholders reach decisions where priorities overlap.
• Work with technology, architecture and delivery colleagues to ensure a shared understanding of requirements and solution design.
• Communicate complex issues and findings clearly to both technical and non-technical people.

 

Solution Delivery

• Support solution design, development and configuration, ensuring delivered solutions meet agreed requirements.
• Define test approaches, support user acceptance testing and help handle defects through to resolution.
• Support implementation, business readiness, training and adoption, and track the realisation of expected benefits.
• Find opportunities to improve data quality, reporting and management information as part of the change being delivered.

 

Good Practice & Team Contribution

• Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of business analysis standards, templates and ways of working.
• Promote good practice in requirements management, documentation and traceability.
• Support and mentor junior analysts where appropriate.
• Help improve the organisation's analytical maturity and culture of continuous improvement.

 

Our must-haves:

• Experience in a business analysis role within the insurance industry.
• Solid experience performing end-to-end analysis across business processes and multiple systems.
• Proven track record of eliciting, documenting, and handling requirements across the project lifecycle, using Agile and/or waterfall approaches.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex issues and identify root causes.
• Good data skills, including the ability to interrogate and interpret data (for example using SQL or similar tools).
• Experience translating business needs into clear solutions, user stories and measurable outcomes.
• Solid understanding of insurance processes, product areas and regulations.
• Experience supporting testing, implementation and adoption of business change.
•  Excellent stakeholder management skills with the capability to develop a partnership approach.
• Exceptional team collaboration – build strong relationships with existing team.
• Ability to work independently and handle your time as well as other resources within the project.
• Capacity to navigate change, handle uncertainty, and remain focused in a dynamic landscape.
  

Desirable Experience

 

• Familiarity with policy administration, underwriting, claims or finance systems.
• Experience working with Finance, Actuarial, Risk or Compliance teams.
• Experience with Power BI or other data visualisation tools.
• Business analysis or delivery certification (for example BCS, IIBA or Agile qualifications).
