Job Role: Senior Bookkeeper
Compensation range: $1,500 AUD - $2,500 AUD / Monthly
Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement
Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.

The business works across a range of residential and commercial projects and is continuing to grow its operations. With this growth comes an increasing need for strong financial processes, accurate reporting, and better visibility across individual jobs and the wider business.
Role Overview: We're looking for an experienced Senior Bookkeeper who can take ownership of the bookkeeping function with minimal supervision.
You'll be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing reconciliations, monitoring job-level profitability, handling AP/AR, processing payroll and BAS, and keeping subcontractor payments organised.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the day-to-day bookkeeping function in Xero.
- Perform bank and account reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate general ledger records.
- Prepare and maintain job-level profit and loss reporting.
- Track project costs, revenue, and profitability.
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Process payroll accurately and on time.
- Assist with BAS preparation and lodgement.
- Track and reconcile subcontractor payments.
- Monitor outstanding invoices and follow up on overdue accounts.
- Assist with supplier and customer payment queries or disputes.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies.
- Provide financial information and reporting to the Business Owner.
- Support ad hoc finance and bookkeeping tasks as required.
- Identify opportunities to improve bookkeeping processes and efficiency.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years' bookkeeping experience, ideally supporting an Australian business.
- Strong practical experience using Xero.
- Ability to manage bookkeeping independently from day one.
- Experience with:
- Bank reconciliations
- General ledger maintenance
- Job-level P&L and profitability tracking
- Accounts payable and receivable
- Payroll
- BAS
- Subcontractor payments
- Good understanding of Australian bookkeeping practices.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Nice-to-Have:
- Experience working with an Australian trade, construction, or project-based business.
- Confidence following up on overdue payments.
- Comfortable handling supplier or customer payment disputes.
