Job Description Summary:

The Research Assistant in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center will support biomedical research projects by performing laboratory experiments, assisting with animal and human subject’s research, contributing to data analysis, and supporting scientific communication between a research laboratory and clinicians within the Department at KUMC.

Job Description:

Job Duties

• Complete and maintain valid training records including new animal user training, human subjects research training, and other required biomedical research training.
• Participate in general laboratory experiments including tissue/cell culture, tissue sectioning and staining, microscopic analysis, Western blotting, DNA/RNA isolation, RT-PCR, qPCR, and other assigned tasks.
• Conduct transgenic animal genotyping, animal euthanasia, and animal tissue collection; assist investigators with surgical and non-surgical animal procedures.
• Assist with human tissue collection for laboratory analysis, which includes obtaining informed consents from human subjects through interacting with patients and clinicians as well as picking up blood samples and surgically produced tissue specimens that are collected by authorized clinicians.
• Assist with research data analysis and laboratory management utilizing relevant software.
• Participate in research presentations.
• Participate in preparation of manuscripts and grant applications under the PI’s direction.

Required Qualifications

Education: Four years of experience in research of biology, biochemistry, or related area. Relevant education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, or related discipline with minimum one year of experience in animal research.

 

Work Experience: 2 years of laboratory research experience.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
