About City of Hope,
City of Hope's mission is to make hope a reality for all touched by cancer and diabetes. Founded in 1913, City of Hope has grown into one of the largest and most advanced cancer research and treatment organizations in the U.S., and one of the leading research centers for diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses. City of Hope research has been the basis for numerous breakthrough cancer medicines, as well as human synthetic insulin and monoclonal antibodies. With an independent, National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center that is ranked top 5 in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report at its core, City of Hope’s uniquely integrated model spans cancer care, research and development, academics and training, and a broad philanthropy program that powers its work. City of Hope’s growing national system includes its Los Angeles campus, a network of clinical care locations across Southern California, a new cancer center in Orange County, California, and cancer treatment centers and outpatient facilities in the Atlanta, Chicago and Phoenix areas.

The Inpatient Supervisor provides day-to-day clinical, operational, and personnel leadership across Inpatient Services. Although the position may have a primary assignment supporting either the third-floor Cellular Therapy unit or the second-floor acuity-adaptable unit, the Supervisor is expected to provide leadership coverage across all inpatient areas and patient populations, including cellular therapy, hematology, oncology, and medical-surgical patients. The role supports a diverse inpatient population across the continuum of care, providing leadership and operational support for patients with varying levels of acuity and complexity.  Based on patient care needs and departmental operations, the Supervisor may be expected to intermittently assume a direct patient care assignment within the scope of licensure and validated clinical competency.

Reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Inpatient Services, the Supervisor serves as a visible clinical and administrative resource for patients, families, nurses, support staff, providers, and interdisciplinary partners. The Supervisor coordinates patient flow and staffing, reinforces clinical standards, develops team members, promotes regulatory readiness, and supports a high-reliability culture focused on safety, quality, inclusion, accountability, and an exceptional patient experience. The Supervisor may provide direct patient care within the scope of licensure and validated competency and acts on behalf of inpatient leadership when delegated.

The successful candidate:

Clinical Operations, Patient Flow, and Acuity Management: Coordinates daily inpatient operations across assigned and supporting units. Oversees patient throughput and allocation of staff and resources. Balances patient acuity, volume, level-of-care needs, staff competencies, and skill mix to support safe, high-quality patient care. Leads huddles/staff meetings, promotes attainment of departmental goals and productivity measures, escalates barriers, and responds to changing clinical or operational priorities.

People Leadership and Workforce Management: Provides direct supervision, coaching, rounding, and timely performance feedback for assigned nursing and support personnel. Participates in recruitment, selection, onboarding, scheduling, timekeeping, attendance management, competency validation, recognition, performance evaluations, corrective action, professional development, succession planning, and retention efforts. Maintains strong communication across day and night shifts and fosters a respectful, inclusive, and psychologically safe work environment.

Clinical Quality, Safety, and Regulatory Readiness: Promotes reliable adherence to evidence-based practice, infection prevention, medication safety, fall and pressure injury prevention, central-line and device care, blood product administration, hazardous medication practices, emergency response, and other applicable clinical standards. Investigates safety events and near misses, completes follow-up, communicates lessons learned, participates in tracers and survey readiness activities, and implements corrective actions in partnership with inpatient leadership and interdisciplinary teams.

Complex Oncology and Continuum-of-Care Support: Ensures coordinated, patient-centered care for cellular therapy, hematology, oncology, and medical-surgical populations across varying levels of acuity. Supports appropriate escalation and de-escalation of care, rapid response and code readiness, symptom management, chemotherapy and biotherapy safety, immunocompromised patient precautions, and patient and caregiver education.  Responds to patient and caregiver complaints, facilitates timely communication and resolution, initiates service-recovery actions within the scope of the role, and escalates significant concerns to inpatient leadership as appropriate. Collaborates closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation, case management, and other disciplines.

Performance Improvement and Resource Stewardship: Monitors and evaluates key operational, clinical, quality, safety, workforce, financial, and patient experience indicators across Inpatient Services. Uses data to identify trends, drive performance improvement initiatives, optimize patient flow and staffing practices, support regulatory compliance, and ensure effective stewardship of labor, supplies, equipment, and departmental resources.

Communication, Collaboration, and Leadership Coverage: Serves as a clinical and administrative resource and liaison among frontline teams, inpatient leadership, providers, ancillary departments, patients, and families. Communicates policy, practice, workflow, and organizational changes; supports shared governance and staff education; and represents Inpatient Services in meetings or committees as assigned. Provides cross-unit and after-hours leadership coverage and responds to urgent clinical or operational issues as required.

Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace code of Conduct and Compliance Plan.

Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
