Job Summary:

The Program Coordinator is responsible for the design, development, organization, promotion, implementation and evaluation of one or more specific programs within Langara College Continuing Studies (CS). Responsibilities include identifying learning needs of students, analysing and utilizing market trends, seeking input from external content experts and relevant internal sources; recruiting and selecting instructors and other pertinent personnel, and inputting course and instructor data into the College computer system. The Program Coordinator is accountable for scheduling of program offerings, optimal enrolments, cost recovery plus revenue generation and adherence to approved Continuing Studies operational procedures and guidelines.


Job Description:


 

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Coordinates, develops, designs, promotes, implements, and evaluates one or more specific programs within Continuing Studies:

  • Coordinates the development of individual programs and courses, and designs programs and courses in consultation with a wide variety of interested parties including internal management, external community, and advisory committees.
  • Contributes to the operational direction of the program area including identifying target market, creating marketing plans, etc.
  • Formulates and submits program and course proposals throughout the term based on market trends.  Constantly researching new trends and must be quick to adapt and respond to unpredictable shifts in priorities and regular critical deadlines.
  • Assists instructors with program and course design including learning outcomes, curriculum, delivery method, teaching strategy, and evaluation.
  • Prepares and submits course descriptions and instructor data for the program database and catalogue.
  • Creates program and class schedules and arranges instructional resources in support of course delivery.
  • Monitors enrolment in accordance with operational guidelines and revises course offerings, class sizes, or cancellations as required.
  • Negotiates and sets instructional and tuition fees with instructors, and establishes minimum class sizes based on costing guidelines. 
  • Assists in the development of promotional materials and advertising plans.
  • Analyzes enrollment reports and student feedback and evaluations.  Recommends the continuation, expansion, deletion and revision of course offerings based upon evaluation data and financial viability.
  • Reviews curriculum and makes necessary changes with assistance from appropriate College personnel to ensure educational quality.
  • Responds to student complaints about course, course content, or instructor and has the ability to refund or give free courses to students as required.
  • Refers exceptional situations, problems or ideas to CS leadership.

2. Manages the recruitment, orientation, supervision, and development of CS staff :

  • Recruits, screens, interviews and recommends for appointment, instructors and other program personnel.
  • Supervises and directs the work of CS instructors (contractors).  Provides orientation, trains, evaluates and provides guidance for instructors and other employees. Orients them to the administrative functions of their specific program area.

3. Provides information and resources to current and prospective students, faculty, and the general public regarding the specific program offered :

  • As the main point of contact for program area, provides new and current students, staff and the general public with timely and accurate information regarding the specific CS program being offered, specific admission requirements, registration policies and procedures, graduation and student services provided.
  • Assists in developing and implementing marketing and communications strategies regarding the assigned programs and courses.
  • Advises students on educational and employment opportunities and responds to their inquiries regarding their participation.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding industry as a whole and the prospects of jobs/careers in that industry.

4. Prepares and manages program budget for specific program area(s) according to established policy and procedures:

  • Prepares and submits revenue and expenditure projections for specific program areas and submits to CS leadership for approval.
  • Monitors operating budgets with the goal to maximizing revenues and minimizing expenditures by setting optimal tuition rates and negotiating the best rates for instructor fees, special equipment, supplies, rent, etc.

5. Maintains knowledge and conducts research on current trends and developments on specific program area(s):

  • Identifies learning needs of students by keeping current with adult learners related to the program area, consulting with adult education experts or related practitioners, and researching and continuing professional development in adult education.
  • Analyzes and utilizes market trends by keeping current with content area; consulting with content experts or industry leaders or practitioners; and researching labour market studies, employment projections, consumer attitude shifts, market segment characteristics and marketing strategies.
  • Seeks input from external content experts and relevant internal sources.
  • Assists in the assessment of community needs for specific programs or courses by maintaining close liaison with appropriate College departments and community organizations.
  • Attends professional development training, workshops, seminars and conferences and by reading professional literature in the related technical field.

6. Represents the College at various internal and external meetings, presentations, and participates in activities associated with the promotion of the Continuing Studies department at the College:

  • Serves on community, College and CS committees as required.
  • Acts as a resource person for Program Advisory Committees.
  • Assists in recruiting community and industry leaders to serve as volunteers on Program Advisory Committee.
  • Promotes the goals, programs, and services of Continuing Studies and the College as a whole.
  • Assists with special events as required including graduation ceremonies, information sessions, job fairs, or CS workshops.

7. Performs routine data entry, prepares/collects/compiles reports, and maintains records/documents as required:

  • Maintains up-to-date course and program files including course outlines, confidential instructor resumes, and student evaluations.
  • Composes, enters and edits course and instructor data into the College computer system.
  • Collects and compiles relevant data.
  • Produces statistics and generates reports regarding student enrollment and tuition projections.

8. Performs other duties/projects as required.

Qualifications Required:

Education & Experience

Professional Registration

  • Current, unrestricted full registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) as an LPN, RN, or RPN
     

Teaching Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to teach adult learners, evidenced by one of the following:
    • Completion of a Provincial Instructor Diploma (PID) or equivalent, or
    • Previous teaching experience with satisfactory references and positive teaching or student evaluations
       

Clinical Experience

  • Minimum two years of full-time Canadian nursing experience (1 year = 1,400 hours)
  • Knowledge of the Canadian health care system and interdisciplinary team roles
  • Experience working with older adults with complex health needs
  • Experience or orientation in home support, assisted living, or multi-level/complex care settings
     

Required Education and Training

  • Completion of Indigenous cultural safety and humility training (e.g., San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training or equivalent)
  • Completion of the Health Care Assistant Practice in BC course (LearningHub)

Additional Experience & Skills

  • Previous instructor experience in health or human services education
  • Post-secondary education in health, human services, or adult education
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education or Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate discipline from an accredited university or equivalent. 
  • Specialized training in area of program area for which the position is responsible.
  • Four (4) years work experience related to program and/or project coordination; plus 3 years work experience related specifically to the content area.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills including advanced word processing, spreadsheet and database management.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in web and print publishing software.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of program/course development, scheduling, market characteristics and supervision and evaluation practices.
  • Sound knowledge of contemporary adult education principles.

Compensation beyond the mid-point requires approval by the Public Sector Employers’ Council Secretariat (PSEC).
