At Boeing Digital Services, we focus on practical innovation that drives tangible results for the aerospace industry. Our team leverages advanced technology and data analytics to develop solutions that enhance operational efficiency and meet the needs of our customers. We are dedicated to creating intuitive, scalable, and secure solutions that empower our customers, partners, and empowered team to succeed. Join us in creating the future of aviation technology, where your contributions will shape impactful solutions for airlines around the globe.

About the Role

We're looking for an individual contributor (IC) Principal Developer (Builder) who will own the end-to-end delivery of a product capability, helping design the solution and leading a small team of developers to build it.

You will work closely with Product, Design, and Technical Leads to understand the holistic vision and strategy of the product, and partner with a Product Manager and Designer to help execute the daily operations of your team. You will be accountable for the quality of what your team delivers, ensuring that it’s in line with the technical strategy.

This role is a hybrid position (2-3 days per week) and can be worked out of our Richmond, BC office.

Position Responsibilities:

Technical Delivery and Oversight

You'll own the technical scope for your product capability, shaping the architecture, driving implementation, and planning delivery with your team. That looks like:

  • Building full-stack, production-grade, cloud-native applications: frontend interfaces, backend services, APIs, and the integrations that connect them across complex enterprise environments.
  • Writing and reviewing code across multiple languages and paradigms.
  • Designing event-driven and microservices architectures that can scale, evolve, and be operated by teams beyond the ones that built them.
  • Integrating AI, ML or LLM capabilities into your product.
  • Implementing CI/CD pipelines and delivery automation that give teams the confidence to ship frequently.
  • Making day-to-day architecture decisions within your product and escalating the right ones to the leadership team when they have broader implications.
  • Identifying technical risk early and surfacing it clearly before it becomes a delivery problem.
  • Generating ideas, failing fast, and demonstrating with key stakeholders.
  • Driving knowledge sharing across teams and the broader technical group.

Team and People

  • Serve as Builder Lead – guiding, coaching, instructing a small team of developers (ex: organizing work, breaking down tasks, pairing on hard problems, and keeping the team moving).
  • Guide and drive adoption of AI assisted development methods (such as agentic coding or SDD).
  • Uplift developers through code review, pairing, and day-to-day technical mentorship.

Upwards Communication

  • Serve as a technical point of contact for your product capability — representing the work clearly to your product, design, and technical leads.
  • Adapt quickly to change and shift focus as required to meet product needs.
  • Contribute to and provide technical documentation for your area of responsibility.

What You Will Bring to the Table

Modern Software Development Expertise

  • Experience building and shipping full-stack applications in production.
  • Depth in at least one part of the stack and enough breadth to work across frontend, backend, APIs, and cloud-hosted services.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages and frameworks.
  • Ability to write clean, testable, production-quality code.
  • Experience making architecture decisions under technical, organizational, and delivery constraints.
  • Ability to document tradeoffs, explain decisions clearly, and remain accountable for production outcomes.
  • Experience working in enterprise environments with distributed/disparate systems, complex integrations, and multi-cloud or hybrid cloud setups.
  • Ability to own code quality for a team through implementation, code review, and technical coaching.
  • Working knowledge of cloud-native architecture, branching strategies, CI/CD automation, and application delivery practices.
  • Experience working with Operations, Platform, or Infrastructure teams.
  • Familiarity with managed container services, infrastructure as code, observability, and production support practices.

Data, Modeling, and Applied Algorithms

  • Experience designing and implementing algorithms for complex product or operational problems.
  • Working knowledge of statistical modeling, machine learning, optimization, forecasting, simulation, or other quantitative methods.
  • Ability to translate ambiguous business problems into clear modeling approaches, assumptions, inputs, outputs, and success measures.
  • Experience working with structured and unstructured data, including data cleaning, feature design, validation, and quality checks.
  • Ability to evaluate model or algorithm performance using appropriate metrics, test data, error analysis, and production feedback.
  • Experience turning data analysis into product or engineering decisions.
  • Ability to explain modeling tradeoffs clearly, including accuracy, latency, cost, explainability, maintainability, and operational risk.
  • Experience partnering with data scientists, analysts, or domain experts to turn research or analysis into production software.
  • Familiarity with data pipelines, analytical workflows, experimentation, and monitoring for model or algorithm behavior in production.

AI and Intelligent Systems

  • Experience shipping AI-powered features to production.
  • Understanding of the lifecycle for AI-enabled features, including integration, evaluation, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Regular use of AI coding tools such as Claude, Cursor, or Windsurf in day-to-day development work.
  • Experience with retrieval-augmented generation, LLM orchestration, or agent workflows, either hands-on or in a technical leadership role.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • 7+ years of hands-on software development / engineering experience, with specific focus on demonstration of technical leadership and delivering software in complex enterprise or cloud environments.
  • 7+ years proven full-stack development experience building and shipping customer-facing or internal business applications, including frontend, backend, APIs, and service integrations.
  • 4+ years experience integrating AI/ML/LLM capabilities into production software, including retrieval-augmented generation, agent workflows, prompt orchestration, or model/API integration.
  • 2+ years experience providing technical leadership on a software team, including architecture input, code review, task breakdown, mentoring, and guiding implementation decisions.
  • 2+ years experience as a technical lead or builder lead on a product team, owning technical scope for a capability or feature set from design through delivery.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language and framework commonly used for production software development, with working knowledge of additional languages or stacks.
  • Experience designing, building, testing, and maintaining scalable cloud-native applications, including familiarity with microservices, event-driven systems, and distributed system patterns.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD, automated testing, version control, and delivery practices that support reliable and frequent software releases.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across Product, Design, Engineering, and Operations to translate ambiguous business needs into clear technical solutions and measurable outcomes.
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada.
  • Individuals must not pose a risk for safeguarding of controlled goods.
  • Must be eligible to handle US export-controlled data.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with modern cloud platforms and application delivery tooling, such as container orchestration, infrastructure as code, observability tools, and automated deployment pipelines.
  • Experience working in complex enterprise environments with distributed systems, legacy modernization, multi-team dependencies, and integrated data or application ecosystems.
  • Experience making architecture tradeoff decisions balancing scalability, reliability, security, maintainability, latency, cost, and delivery speed.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and uplift other engineers through pairing, code review, technical mentorship, and knowledge sharing.
  • Experience with data-driven or algorithmic product development, including statistical analysis, forecasting, optimization, experimentation, or operational decision support.
  • Experience working in software development in the aerospace or other industrial industry preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Information Systems.
