Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant, Epilepsy, Department of Neurology,

Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine (BU-CASM)

The Nurse Practitioner (NP)/Physician Assistant (PA-C) will partner with and perform clinical duties under the general supervision of the Division Chief of Epilepsy. The candidate will be responsible for providing outpatient clinical care and some inpatient care in support of epilepsy patients and those with seizure-related disorders.

The Department of Neurology at Boston Medical Center is a full-service clinical and academic program that provides advanced treatment for patients with a broad spectrum of diseases and disorders of the brain, nervous system, peripheral nerves, spinal cord, and related muscle and blood vessels. Our team includes highly experienced physicians and nurse practitioners who subspecialize in all major areas of neurology. We have multidisciplinary programs in neuro-critical care, neuro-oncology, infectious disease, and cerebrovascular disease that provide our patients with a broad spectrum of treatment options. Schedule:  This role will be structured as a 4-day per week, 10-hr per day position, although alternate arrangements for a full-time role could be considered.  Responsibilities will include both shared clinics with neurology physicians and clinics and inpatient care where the candidate will function as an independent practitioner.

General Responsibilities:

  • Obtaining complete medical history and performing a physical examination.
  • Ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies.
  • Formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Evaluating outcomes of patient care and making necessary revisions in care plan.
  • Setting priorities for appropriate and efficient management of patient care that reflect cost-effective management of time, available human resources, supplies, and equipment.
  • Performing physical examinations within prescribed guidelines and appropriate to patient needs.
  • Recording pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
  • Maintaining an interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patient care information with appropriate providers within neurology and other departments at Boston Medical Center
  • Seeking and providing consultative and support services as required in the inpatient setting.
  • Assisting in coordinating care for complex patient care situations in collaboration with all Division of Epileptology team members, acting on availability and awareness of community resources and assisting staff, patients, and families to effectively utilize them.
  • Supporting epileptologists with care management utilizing the full capacity of licensed skills.
  • Prescribing and/or dispensing medication.
  • May be involved with a patient's medical care in any role which the attending physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, hospital regulations, delineation of privileges, and the Nurse Practitioner's or Physician Assistant’s training, knowledge, skill, and experience.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with the various members of the health care team, patients, and families in a supportive clinical care environment.
  • Computer proficiency, inclusive of the ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information required.
  • Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with the practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
  • Full command (verbal and written) of the English language.
  • Commitment to caring for a diverse population of patients.

Job Requirements:

Qualified Nurse Practitioner (NP):

  • Hold master’s degree in nursing
  • Have a current license to practice as a registered nurse practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with APRN authorization by the Board of Registration in Nursing
  • Be registered with the ANCC or other accrediting organization for Nurse Practitioners

Qualified Physician Assistant (PA-C):

  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree and must be a graduate of a PA Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA) or its predecessor
  • Be eligible for the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA) PANCE and eligible for PA licensure in the State of Massachusetts

Documentation of the Massachusetts PA license and initial NCCPA certification is required upon hire

NP/PA-C must have the following:

  • Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration
  • A Federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • Clinical experience in a neurology setting or with a neurological patient population is preferred.
