The New York Times Newsroom Operations team is looking for a news assistant to work on our data journalism teams – with a focus on elections and weather data – in a support role with varied tasks and responsibilities. You will be an engaged and collegial team member who is able to support reporters and editors across a range of responsibilities. Organization, flexibility and a desire to learn new skills are critical to success in this role.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office a minimum of four days each week.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with data entry for poll collection pages
  • Fact-checking and verifying figures in stories, charts and polling releases
  • Gathering information and calling county officials to verify what data they will have on election night
  • Help manage the audience accounts, i.e. generate, proofread and fact-check audience-related tasks
  • Assisting in project management by keeping documentation and project boards up-to-date
  • Monitor audience metrics for the weather team
  • Eagerly tackle new responsibilities as the need arises
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Director, Newsroom Operations

Basic Qualifications:

  • 1+ years experience with Google Workspace, including Google Sheets
  • 1+ years experience in a role requiring research, data journalism or fact checking
  • Experience in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills; attention to detail
  • Attention to detail, organization and self-directedness
  • Comfort talking to people on the phone

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in elections and/or weather
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A passion for learning about new tools and journalism formats
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize to meet deadlines
  • Any experience in a coding language or expert level spreadsheet skills

Additional Compensation and Benefits:

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$67,626$68,000 USD
