The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for owning the mechanical design and analysis from concept through flight, working closely with electrical/RF engineers, systems engineers, and program management to deliver flight hardware that survives launch and performs in the space environment. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role for someone who wants to see a design through its full lifecycle from early trade studies and requirements, through analysis, drawings, fabrication, test, and flight.

The position reports to the Mechanical Engineering Manager and is part of the Engineering department based in San Diego, CA. This role is100% onsite.

In this role, the essential functions are: 

    • Design mechanical enclosures, structures, systems, and mounting solutions for spacecraft electronics payloads
    • Generate detailed part and assembly drawings with GD&T per ASME-Y14.5 in SolidWorks suitable for fabrication and inspection
    • Perform structural and thermal analysis using SolidWorks Simulation and/or Ansys Mechanical to verify design margins against launch loads, on-orbit thermal environments, and mission requirements
    • Conduct space environment thermal analysis, incorporating conductive and radiative heat transfer, to support thermal design and component survivability
    • Conduct bolted joint analysis per NASA-STD-5020 to verify fastener margins under launch and on-orbit loading
    • Perform Steinberg-based structural fatigue analysis for electronic components subjected to random vibration and shock environments
    • Create Mechanical BOM’s selecting proper materials (adhesives, overcoats, inks, etc.) based on spaceflight requirements/restrictions and materials engineering knowledge
    • Collaborate closely with electrical and RF engineers on PCB layout, packaging, and mechanical-electrical integration
    • Develop manufacturing instructions and work with fabrication/assembly technicians to build flight and engineering hardware
    • Write environmental test procedures (TVAC, sine/random vibration, shock) and support test execution and data review
    • Develop content for and present at formal design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, etc.)
    • Work with vendors to source manufactured hardware
    • Work effectively in a leadership or support role on a multi-disciplinary project team
    • Own hardware through its full lifecycle — from concept and requirements through design, analysis, build, test, and delivery

    • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent years of experience 
    • Minimum 6 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering design as it relates to Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs)
    • Knowledge of space flight requirements, standards and environments is required
    • 5 years minimum experience in SolidWorks, Ansys or equivalent 3D CAD experience
    • Strong background in the knowledge drafting standards per ASME-Y14.5 and GD&T
    • Understanding of machining and mechanical assembly as it impacts design
    • Experience writing manufacturing instructions.

Travel, Physical and/or Government Mandated Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).

The good faith base salary range for this role is $110,000–$135,000 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base salary only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future.
