Provides specialized multi-asset trade management, margin analysis, and operational risk oversight for BMO InvestorLine. Acts as first line of defense for complex trading activity by reviewing, approving, modifying, restricting, or escalating securities transactions that may expose clients or the Bank to financial, credit, market, regulatory, or reputational risk. Applies advanced knowledge of capital markets, securities regulations, margin requirements, options strategies, corporate actions, and trading systems to assess complex situations in real time under market deadlines. Contributes to business results by identifying emerging risks, recommending and implementing control enhancements, supporting strategic initiatives, and providing subject matter expertise across multiple business units.

The role operates across high-volume and high-value trading activities where decisions may directly affect client financial outcomes, the Bank’s credit and operational exposure, market and settlement risk, regulatory compliance, and the effectiveness of the first-line control environment. Errors or delayed intervention may result in client loss, unsecured or concentrated exposure, failed or incorrect transactions, regulatory or audit findings, operational losses, and reputational impact.

Key Accountabilities

  • Reviews and evaluates complex equity, option, mutual fund, GIC, fixed income, and foreign exchange orders to determine whether they should be released, modified, restricted, rejected, or escalated.
  • Acts as a gatekeeper and first line of defense for the business by balancing client service objectives with operational, financial, regulatory, market, and reputational risk exposure.
  • Assesses liquidity, trading volume, volatility, concentration, and price sensitivity on large or unusual orders to determine impacts on clients, market pricing, and business exposure.
  • Performs complex, time-sensitive margin and buying power calculations across multi-leg option strategies, concentrated positions, and leveraged accounts, and determines account eligibility and required action.
  • Identifies excessive leverage, margin deficiencies, under-equity conditions, and deteriorating account conditions; recommends or applies restrictions to mitigate potential loss.
  • Contacts clients regarding margin calls, cash debits, credit sellouts, loan conditions, FX risk, and account restrictions, and explains complex calculations and regulatory rules in clear terms.
  • Manages option lifecycle risk, including exercise and assignment notification, expiry report review, and timely closing of in-the-money positions accounts cannot support.
  • Researches and controls corporate action risk, including reverse splits and reorganizations.
  • Monitors and resolves order rejects, trade breaks, and unfilled or incorrectly booked transactions, and coordinates corrections with clients and partner teams.
  • Monitors accounts for fraud, wash trading, unauthorized trading, market manipulation indicators, and unacceptable trading behaviour, and takes action to reduce client and business losses.
  • Applies CIRO requirements, internal policies, AML, privacy, and consumer protection obligations in day-to-day decision making.
  • Identifies control gaps, system Edit deficiencies, and process weaknesses; recommends and supports implementation of preventive and detective control enhancements.
  • Conducts root cause analysis on recurring exceptions, client-impacting incidents, and control failures, and recommends sustainable corrective action.
  • Acts as a TMD subject matter expert on strategic initiatives involving platforms, margin functionality, order management systems, and risk controls; defines requirements, evaluates solutions, and completes user acceptance testing.
  • Reviews and recommends updates to procedures, job aids, and control documentation to reflect approved policy, regulatory, and system changes.
  • Acts as a key resource for InvestorLine frontline and support teams and collaborates with Credit, Risk, Margin Lending, Equity Desk, Compliance, and Technology partners to resolve complex situations.
  • Trains new hires, coaches team members on difficult orders, and identifies knowledge gaps for targeted training and job aids.
  • Supports Audit, Compliance, Legal, and Operational Risk reviews by providing accurate transaction evidence, documented analysis, and clear rationale for decisions taken.
  • Documents decisions, calculations, client outreach, and actions in a complete, accurate, and auditable manner.
  • Exercises judgment to identify, diagnose, and solve problems within given rules; determines when matters require management, Credit, Compliance, or trading desk escalation.
  • Works independently on a range of complex, time-sensitive, and non-routine tasks, which may include unique situations.
  • Operates effectively in a high-volume environment with changing priorities, market events, and regulatory and audit scrutiny.
  • Accesses and safeguards sensitive Bank, customer, transactional, and employee information in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Takes measured risks while protecting the Bank by applying our Risk Management Framework in the execution of the role, in line with our Risk Culture and within our approved Risk Appetite, making sound and risk informed decisions that align to business strategy, protect assets, and adhere to applicable policy documents, laws, and regulations.
  • Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Typically between 4 - 6 years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of the CSC, CPH and DFOL, or CIRO-administered CIRE and Derivatives examinations, plus at least one year of relevant experience acquired after obtaining these qualifications.
  • Degree in Accounting/Economics/Mathematics/Statistics preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of BMO InvestorLine products, the order and trade lifecycle, brokerage operations, and related trading systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of equities, options and multi-leg strategies, fixed income, margin and buying power calculations, concentration risk, and credit exposure.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian securities regulation, CIRO requirements, AML, privacy, internal controls, and operational risk principles.
  • Ability to manage high volumes of work and data, prioritize competing risks, and maintain accuracy under time-sensitive conditions.
  • Proficient with in-house trading applications, MS Office, and macros.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong verbal & written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong Collaboration & team skills.
