GENERAL DESCRIPTION 

The Infrastructure & Automation Solutions Engineer is a senior, hands-on technical resource responsible for designing, implementing, integrating, securing, and continuously improving the College’s infrastructure, identity, automation, and technology platforms. The position bridges infrastructure operations, systems integration, and solution engineering to reduce manual work, improve reliability, modernize services, and translate institutional needs into practical, supportable technology solutions.

This position requires technical depth in one or more relevant disciplines, along with the versatility to work across a diverse technology environment. Responsibilities require sound judgment, independent problem solving, and the ability to balance security, reliability, usability, cost, and long-term maintainability.                             

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Identity & Access Management

  • Administer and improve identity, directory, authentication, authorization, and account lifecycle services. 
  • Design and maintain reliable onboarding, role-change, access provisioning, and offboarding processes for institutional populations and service accounts. 
  • Support identity governance, SSO, MFA, conditional access, least privilege, and secure integration with institutional applications. 
     

Automation & Integration Development

  • Design, build, and maintain scripts, workflows, APIs, services, and lightweight internal solutions that automate operations and improve service delivery. 
  • Integrate infrastructure, identity, cloud, and business systems to improve data flow, lifecycle management, and cross-functional processes. 
  • Apply disciplined engineering practices, including source control, testing, logging, monitoring, error handling, change management, and maintainable documentation. 
  • Evaluate and appropriately apply emerging technologies, including AI-enabled capabilities, to improve operations, support, and institutional services. 
     

Infrastructure, Cloud & Platform Services

  • Administer, troubleshoot, and improve cloud, hybrid, server, virtualization, storage, backup, directory, and related platform services,  including remote administration and oversight of physical server infrastructure, data center systems, and supporting network distribution facilities, in coordination with on-site personnel and service providers as needed.
  • Plan and support infrastructure modernization, lifecycle management, capacity, monitoring, patching, configuration, and technology refresh activities. 
  • Design for availability, recoverability, security, performance, and operational sustainability across hosted and on-premises environments. 
     

Security, Risk & Operational Support

  • Implement secure configurations and participate in vulnerability remediation, access reviews, risk reduction, and infrastructure hardening. 
  • Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, backup validation, disaster recovery testing, and business continuity planning. 
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and escalation support for complex problems spanning infrastructure, identity, integrations, applications, and network-dependent services. 
     

Collaboration, Architecture & Project Delivery

  • Partner with campus stakeholders, vendors, consortium partners, and technical teams to develop and implement effective technology solutions.
  • Lead or participate in infrastructure, automation, integration, and service improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with consortium partners, shared-services organizations, and peer institutions to support joint initiatives, shared technology services, operational planning, and cross-institutional technology solutions.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, standards, and operational procedures.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Ability to apply knowledge across infrastructure, identity, automation, integration, security, and related technology services to support assigned responsibilities and institutional needs. 
  • Knowledge of enterprise infrastructure and platform administration, including monitoring, patching, configuration, lifecycle management, backup, recovery, and operational support. 
  • Ability to develop and maintain production-ready automation solutions using scripting, programming, workflow, or comparable technologies. 
  • Knowledge of APIs and common systems-integration patterns, with the ability to design, troubleshoot, secure, and maintain integrations among enterprise systems and services. 
  • Knowledge of directory services, identity platforms, authentication, authorization, account lifecycle management, SSO, MFA, and least-privilege practices. 
  • Ability to work with cloud, virtualization, server, storage, backup, networking, database, and hybrid infrastructure technologies as required by assigned responsibilities. 
  • Knowledge of secure solution design and operational practices, including privileged access, vulnerability remediation, change control, logging, monitoring, incident response, disaster recovery, and business continuity. 
  • Ability to apply disciplined engineering practices, including source control, testing, error handling, documentation, deployment, and ongoing support of production solutions. 
  • Ability to evaluate and appropriately apply emerging technologies, including data platforms, and modern application architectures. 
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis skills, including the ability to work independently through ambiguous and cross-system problems. 
  • Ability to translate institutional and operational needs into practical, scalable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions. 
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly, prepare documentation for technical and non-technical audiences, collaborate across functional and organizational boundaries, and manage multiple priorities and projects. 

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and relevant professional experience. 
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience designing, administering, integrating, or supporting enterprise technology environments. 

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience in higher education, research, a multi-institution environment, or another complex enterprise technology environment. 
  • Professional experience spanning multiple technical disciplines, such as infrastructure, cloud services, identity and access management, systems integration, automation, software engineering, DevOps, networking, databases, security, or operational resilience. 
  • Relevant industry certifications in cloud, infrastructure, identity, networking, software engineering, DevOps, security, or project delivery. 
     

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Time Type: Full-time

Work Schedule: The regular hours for this position will be scheduled between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  These hours may vary due to needs of the College or department.

Work Model: Remote

  • Must have access to reliable and secure computer and internet connection.
  • Must have access to a dedicated and suitable workstation at remote location, including desk or table and supporting, upright chair. Must ensure workstation is safe and free from hazards and ergonomically appropriate.

Compensation: Budgeted Salary Range: $90,000 - $105,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and demonstrated skills.

Physical Requirements: This position is generally sedentary and requires the ability to sit for prolonged periods of time and operate a computer for extended durations This position is performed remotely and primarily requires computer-based work. The role may require remote oversight, troubleshooting, and coordination with on-site personnel, vendors, or service providers supporting physical infrastructure and data center environments.
