Role Summary:                

The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for supporting and promoting a safe, healthy and compliant

working environment across the manufacturing facility. The role ensures alignment with applicable

Irish health and safety legislation and company standards, while working closely with management and

employees to identify and reduce workplace risks. The Health & Safety Officer will promote a proactive

and preventative safety culture, provide expert guidance and support on health and safety matters,

and use safety data, incident investigations and workplace insights to identify opportunities and drive

continuous improvement.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Health & Safety Management System – Maintain and continuously improve the site's health and safety management system, ensuring policies, procedures, risk assessments, training, inspections, audits and corrective actions are effectively implemented and maintained.
  • Legal compliance – Support the organisation in maintaining compliance with applicable Irish health and safety legislation, regulations, codes of practice and company requirements, providing practical advice to managers and employees and escalating significant risks where appropriate.
  • Risk management – Lead and maintain the site's risk assessment programme, ensuring hazards are identified, risks are assessed and appropriate controls are implemented, communicated and regularly reviewed.
  • Safety Statement – Maintain, update and communicate the Safety Statement and associated policies and procedures, ensuring they remain relevant to the site's activities and risks.
  • Workplace inspections and audits – Conduct regular workplace inspections, safety observations and internal audits to identify hazards, unsafe conditions and opportunities for improvement. Work with relevant managers to ensure corrective actions are implemented and closed in a timely manner.
  • Incident and accident management – Lead or support the investigation of accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and corrective actions. Maintain appropriate records, monitor follow-up actions and analyse trends to prevent recurrence.
  • Safety culture and employee engagement – Promote a proactive safety culture where employees are encouraged and empowered to identify hazards, report concerns and participate in improving workplace safety. Deliver safety communications, toolbox talks, campaigns and other initiatives as appropriate.
  • Safety training – Manage and maintain the site's safety training programme, ensuring employees receive appropriate induction, refresher and role-specific training. Deliver training through presentations and other appropriate learning resources.
  • First Responder / First Aid programme – Coordinate the site's First Responder programme, including training, certification, equipment and supplies, ensuring appropriate coverage and readiness.
  • Emergency preparedness and fire safety – Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, including fire safety arrangements, evacuation procedures, emergency response teams, drills and associated training. Ensure emergency equipment and procedures are maintained and regularly reviewed.
  • Contractor safety – Manage the site's contractor safety programme, including contractor pre-qualification, induction, risk assessment, site requirements and monitoring of compliance while working on site.

  • Manufacturing and equipment safety – Partner with Operations, Engineering and Maintenance to ensure health and safety considerations are incorporated into new equipment, process changes, maintenance activities, facility modifications and other operational changes.
  • Safety Data Sheets and chemical safety – Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure appropriate information is available and communicated to employees who work with or may be exposed to relevant substances.
  • Safety performance and reporting – Maintain accurate H&S records and provide regular reporting to management on safety performance, incidents, near misses, training, audit findings, risk exposure and corrective actions. Identify trends and recommend opportunities for improvement.
  • Safety initiatives and recognition – Recommend and support appropriate safety initiatives, awareness campaigns and recognition programmes that encourage positive safety behaviours and employee participation.
  • Cross-functional collaboration – Coordinate and collaborate with H&S-related teams and groups, including First Responders, the Safety Committee, Fire Drill Team and other relevant employee or management groups.
  • Continuous improvement – Identify opportunities to improve H&S processes, systems and ways of working, and lead or participate in relevant improvement projects.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

Qualifications & Experience:


  • Relevant Health & Safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH, IOSH or equivalent) and/or relevant third-level qualification, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Previous experience in a Health & Safety role within a manufacturing, engineering, logistics or similarly operational environment is desirable.
  • Practical knowledge of Irish health and safety legislation, regulations and relevant codes of practice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of workplace risk assessment, incident investigation, safety auditing and corrective action processes.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, equipment and operational safety is desirable.
  • Experience developing and delivering health and safety training.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with employees and managers at all levels.
  • Ability to influence and constructively challenge managers and employees while building strong working relationships.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, projects and deadlines.
  • Effective problem-solving and analytical skills, including the ability to identify root causes and develop practical corrective actions.
  • Proactive approach to identifying safety risks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage others and drive shared accountability for safety.
  • High level of integrity, discretion and professional judgement.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable maintaining and analysing H&S data and records.
  • Ability and willingness to work regularly across the manufacturing facility and operational areas.
