Community Work-Study Program

The Community Work-Study Program (CWS) provides federal financial aid eligible students the opportunity to work part-time at nonprofit organizations that serve the public interest.  

Goals of this program include:  

• Developing interest in public service through employment with TAMIU and placement in local nonprofit, government, or community-based organizations.  
• Applying skills and theories gained through coursework to solve problems and explore issues outside the classroom.  
• Enhancing career competencies, such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership.  
• Articulating how experiences will shape personal, academic, and professional pursuits.  

Job Summary

The program intern will provide direct leadership and support to Girl Scout troops and groups by facilitating engaging, age-appropriate programming and creating positive experiences for girls. The student will work directly with youth, lead Girl Scout activities, encourage participation and leadership, and help create an environment where girls feel welcomed, supported, and empowered.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Facilitate Girl Scout troop and group meetings and activities for girls across different age levels.
• Lead programming related to STEM, outdoor activities, life skills, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
• Follow provided Girl Scout curriculum, meeting plans, and program resources.
• Adapt activities as appropriate based on participants’ ages and needs.
• Encourage girls to participate, express their ideas, build confidence, and develop leadership skills.
• Provide positive guidance and age-appropriate behavior management.
• Assist girls as they work toward badges, Journeys, awards, and other Girl Scout opportunities.
• Prepare materials and supplies for troop meetings and assist with setup and cleanup.
• Maintain attendance and program participation records.
• Communicate with Girl Scout staff regarding troop needs, attendance, accomplishments, challenges, and upcoming activities.
• Encourage parent, caregiver, and volunteer participation when appropriate.
• Assist with recruitment, membership activities, community programs, school-based programming, and special events as needed.
• Follow all required Girl Scout safety standards, policies, procedures, and supervision requirements.
• Maintain professionalism and confidentiality when working with girls, families, volunteers, schools, and community partners.

Minimum Requirements

• Enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours per semester for undergraduates, 3 credit hours for graduates).  
• Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.  
• Must have a current and complete file with the Office of Financial Aid.  
• Must demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA application annually.  
• Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen with an alien registration number.  
• Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).

Other Requirements

• Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with class schedule.
• Promptly complete all required training.
• Input hours worked daily and submit time sheet biweekly.  
• Some evening and weekend work may be required.
• Reliable transportation.
• Subject to funding and/or need.
  

Rate of Pay: $10.00/hour for up to 15 hours per week
