Über diese Embedded Software Engineer Stelle bei Lexington Medical, Inc.

Lexington Medical, Inc. · Vor Ort · Bedford, MA

As an Embedded Software Engineer at Lexington Medical, you will write and debug the firmware that drives a surgical stapler, C and C++ on ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers controlling the motors, sensors, and mechanisms inside the device. This is an early-career role for an engineer who has already done real embedded work in an internship or co-op and wants to keep building hardware-driven products rather than move away from the hardware. Because the electrical and mechanical engineers who designed the board and the mechanism sit in the same building in Bedford, you debug at the bench with the people who can change either one.

About Lexington Medical

Lexington Medical is a medical device company designing and manufacturing surgical stapling technology at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. Our AEON™ Endostapler is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive surgical stapler used in operating rooms around the world. With engineering, manufacturing, and quality working closely together, engineers stay close to the product and see their work move from an idea through prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and ultimately into the operating room.

About the Role

As an Embedded Software Engineer at Lexington Medical, you will contribute to the development, testing, and integration of embedded firmware in the AEON™ surgical stapling platform and the products behind it. You will implement and debug low-level drivers and communication interfaces (SPI, I2C, CAN, UART, USB) as well as the application logic that commands and monitors electromechanical subsystems, then take that firmware to the bench and prove it works against real hardware. You will work day to day with embedded, electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers, particularly during hardware bring-up, when firmware, board, and mechanism all meet for the first time.

You will also learn how software gets built for a Class II medical device. That means writing code that can be reviewed and traced, documenting requirements, design decisions, and test results to satisfy FDA design controls and IEC 62304, and supporting verification and validation through bench and system-level testing. Our teams are small, so you will own real modules early and have direct access to the engineers making the design decisions around them.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and test embedded firmware running on ARM Cortex-M or equivalent microcontroller-based systems in C and C++.
  • Develop and integrate low-level drivers and communication interfaces, including SPI, I2C, CAN, UART, and USB.
  • Build and debug the application-layer logic that controls and monitors electromechanical systems, including motor control and sensor feedback.
  • Work with electrical and mechanical engineers on hardware bring-up, debugging, and system integration, confirming that firmware interacts correctly with motors, sensors, and physical mechanisms.
  • Debug at the bench using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG or SWD hardware debuggers, and isolate whether a failure is in firmware, hardware, or the mechanism.
  • Participate in code reviews and design discussions, and apply the modular, maintainable firmware patterns the team uses.
  • Support verification and validation activities through bench testing and system-level testing.
  • Document software requirements, design decisions, and test results in alignment with FDA design controls and IEC 62304 expectations.
  • Contribute to firmware quality, reliability, and traceability as the platform matures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related discipline.
  • One or more years of relevant experience, including internships or co-ops with substantial hands-on embedded or hardware-focused work.
  • Experience writing and debugging embedded C or C++.
  • Comfortable working with microcontrollers, hardware-level debugging tools, and lab equipment.
  • Exposure to real-time or bare-metal embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, or CAN.
  • Hands-on experience with robotics, motor control, sensors, or electromechanical systems, through internships, academic projects, or personal projects.
  • Experience with an RTOS such as FreeRTOS, or with writing firmware under IEC 62304 or FDA design controls, is a plus.

What Success Looks Like

  • Within your first three to six months, you own a driver or firmware module end to end, from implementation through bench verification, and the team trusts your test results.
  • By one year, you can take a new board revision from power-on to working firmware, and you catch real problems in other engineers’ code reviews.
  • The engineers who work alongside you can pick up your firmware and your documentation without asking you what it does.
