Senior Fullstack Engineer — Benchmarks & Ad Studies

We're looking for a Senior Fullstack Engineer to join the team working on Benchmarks and Ad Studies at Smartly. 

Our team builds systems that ingest, process, and transform large volumes of advertising data into capabilities used across Smartly's platform. The engineering challenges span data integrations, high-performance APIs, distributed processing, data modeling, and analytics computation.

This is a backend-heavy role (90% backend, 10% frontend) for an engineer who enjoys reasoning about complex systems: how data flows through them, where performance bottlenecks emerge, how services behave at scale, and how architectural decisions affect reliability and maintainability over time.

You'll operate as a strong senior individual contributor, owning complex technical problems and influencing the architecture and engineering practices of the team.

Our tech stack

Our environment includes:

• Node.js and TypeScript
• Redis
• Ruby on Rails and Sidekiq
• PostgreSQL

Depending on the problem, you may also work with or encounter technologies and concepts such as Kafka, Kubernetes, AWS/GCP, data warehouses, and distributed data-processing systems.

We don't expect candidates to have worked with every technology in our stack. We care more about strong backend fundamentals and the ability to understand and improve complex systems.

What you’ll do

• Design, build, and evolve data-intensive backend services and APIs that operate reliably at scale.
• Build and maintain data ingestion pipelines and integrations with internal and external systems.
• Develop strategies for efficiently processing large volumes of data while maintaining high API performance and predictable system behavior.
• Design data models and processing architectures that balance performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Work on distributed systems where failures, retries, concurrency, consistency, and observability are part of the engineering problem.
• Identify performance bottlenecks across services, databases, and data-processing workflows and drive improvements.
• Take ownership of technical problems from design through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
• Influence architectural decisions and help the team make pragmatic technical trade-offs.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to turn complex product requirements into robust technical solutions.
• Raise the engineering bar through thoughtful design discussions, code reviews, and strong software engineering practices.

What we’re looking for

• Strong professional experience building backend systems with Node.js, TypeScript, or comparable modern backend technologies.
• Experience designing and operating robust, complex, distributed applications in production.
• Strong understanding of APIs, databases, data modeling, asynchronous processing, and backend performance.
• Experience working with systems that ingest, transform, or process significant amounts of data.
• Ability to reason about scalability, reliability, concurrency, failure modes, and system performance.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and an ability to make pragmatic architectural decisions.
• Experience taking ownership of technically ambiguous problems and driving them toward production-ready solutions.
• Ability to contribute to architecture and technical direction while operating effectively as a senior individual contributor.
• Clear communication and collaboration skills across engineering and product teams.
• Ability to work from our Mexico City office one day per week.
