Position Overview:

The Director of Planning and Communication is a member of the CTO’s Leadership Team with responsibility for web development, and department-wide support for communications and project management processes and strategies. The Director will provide direction, supervision and mentorship for the WebPAC team, which includes three web developers, a communications specialist, and a project manager/analyst.

The Director will partner with staff in the Division of Communications on overall management of Carleton’s web presence and its vital role in public outreach. The Director will work in partnership with the CTO and others in ITS as we provide the evolving portfolio of technology services required to meet the College’s institutional mission. 

Compensation:

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $101,200 and $104,600. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Carleton was founded in 1866 and has a long tradition of innovative undergraduate teaching and pragmatic decision-making. Information Technology Services (ITS) is a department of 42 staff members in six areas: Academic Technology, Enterprise Information Services, Information Security, Systems & Infrastructure, Technology Support, and Planning & Communication (WebPAC). 

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall direction and oversight for web development and infrastructure as well as ITS departmental approaches and processes for project intake and management. 
  • Provide supervision and mentorship of the WebPAC team members. Cultivate a team-based environment based on trust and adaptability in the face of evolving change that fosters creative responses to expanding academic and administrative web needs. 
  • Ensure that the site adheres to current web standards such as browser compatibility, accessibility guidelines, responsive design and code validity and that the web infrastructure is robust and highly reliable. 
  • Work closely with community members to translate needs into web project requirements, implementation plans, and timelines. 
  • Manage a portfolio of technology-related projects, including leading the ITS team members and community through prioritizing efforts and regular project and portfolio status reporting. 
  • Work closely with the Director of Marketing Communications on daily operations management of the College’s web infrastructure, including software updates and support for site maintainers. 
  • Provide leadership, in partnership with the CTO and VP of Communications, for strategic direction setting for Carleton’s web presence and toolset.  
  • Co-lead a campus-wide project management steering group with the College’s Chief of Staff and seek opportunities to leverage Asana and build campus-wide project practices. 

Supervision Received and Exercised:

This position reports to the Chief Technology Officer and provides supervision and mentorship of the WebPAC team members

Education/Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent 
  • Five or more years of full-time professional experience working in web technology
  • Two or more years of full-time professional leadership and supervisory experience
  • Experience managing employees and supporting their work and their growth 
  • Excellent interpersonal skill, including the ability to adapt to a large user base from varied backgrounds and perspectives
  • Excellent oral and written communication, including the ability to translate technology and be adaptable for people with a wide range of skill levels
  • Demonstrated expertise in project management, including planning skills and change management strategies for users with varied reactions to technology change
  • Good judgement in complex situations
  • A combination of patience, flexibility, and persistence that facilitates the success of technology projects in the Liberal Arts setting

Preferred:

  • Five or more years of professional full-time experience supervising professional staff 
  • Master’s degree or relevant certifications
  • Experience in higher education
  • Experience in website design, maintenance, or development and SEO, GEO, AEO.
  • Experience with Asana or other project management software 
  • Experience leading project teams with both technical staff and campus partners 

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
