Position Overview:

Carleton College seeks an Assistant Director of the Office of Intercultural Life (OIL) to provide office administration and program coordination. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Director, Associate Director, and student employees to design, implement and assess programs that support OIL’s mission. In particular, the Assistant Director will help develop and coordinate programs, manage student employees, and ensure efficient operations of the OIL office. This role will interact directly with students, staff, and faculty and this role reports to the Director.

This is a full-time position with occasional evening and weekend commitments. This job description is not exhaustive; the person holding this role will perform additional duties as assigned by their direct supervisor.

Department Overview:

The Office of Intercultural Life (OIL) strives to create a diverse and welcoming campus community that embraces individual differences, advocates for social justice, and cultivates inclusion. OIL centers the experiences of students of color while working collaboratively to create a campus wide culture of understanding and belonging. The office is open to assist all students regardless of race, gender, color, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and national or ethnic origin by focusing on retention, programming, leadership development, training and education. The work of the office reflects the changing paradigms of student growth, particularly as it relates to community building and fostering a sense of connection.

OIL has four goals:

  • Foster belonging by creating a supportive environment where students of color feel accepted, included, and valued as their authentic selves.

  • Build community by maximizing engagement and strengthening bonds among individuals and communities of color.

  • Support academic success and retention through collaboration with faculty, deans, and college resources.

  • Raise awareness of and explore issues affecting communities of color locally, nationally, or globally.

Compensation:

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $55,000 and $56,900. The salary range has been prorated based on the part-time nature of this position. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

  • With the Director and Associate Director, develop, implement and evaluate new and ongoing campus wide programming specifically designed to help support students of color adjust to and thrive at the College.

  • Assist in planning and implementing OIL’s community-building activities and heritage month celebrations.

  • Lead programming logistics (e.g. secure space, order catering, manage RSVPs, etc.) for all OIL events

  • Coordinate the activities of campus cultural organizations and serve as a primary contact for the Cultural Organization Programming Board. 

  • Serve on divisional committees and contribute to division wide initiatives and strategic planning efforts.

  • Provide oversight of and programmatic guidance for OIL’s 4 residential cultural houses.

OFFICE AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

  • Develop and maintain an efficient electronic file management system (via Google Drive or ASANA).

  • Supervise cultural house managers and building supervisors: recruit, hire,train,  manage scheduling and approve timecards.

COMMUNICATIONS

  • Oversee the development and publication of OIL newsletters, manage OIL’s social media platforms, and produce other campus-wide communications.

  • Maintain the OIL webpage and OIL’s calendar of events electronically and externally.

Education/Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 2 years of full-time professional experience directly related working in a similar environment and/or with similar populations.

  • Knowledge of the history and current impact of systems on the experiences of students of color in higher education.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize, anticipate needs, and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

  • Tendency to take initiative and ability to accomplish tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to act with a high level of courtesy, tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality. 

  • A growth mindset, a commitment to learning, and a desire to continuously improve. 

  • Computer proficiency, including experience with MS Office products and Google Suite.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher education Administration, or related field and 2 years of directly related experience working in a similar environment and/or with similar populations. 

  • Basic website design and management skills.

  • Experience working in and understanding of a residential liberal arts college environment.

  • Experience supervising student staff.

  • Experience with Asana, Constant Contact, and DropBox. 

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
