Position Overview:

The Program Manager for Community and Civic Engagement is responsible for a portfolio of community engagement programs in the Carleton College Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE). Their core responsibilities include supervising student leaders who coordinate community-engaged volunteer programs and organizing a large-scale community fundraising program known as Lighten Up, which involves a wide range of campus and community stakeholders.

Compensation:

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $62,500 and $64,700 The salary range has been prorated based on the part-time nature of this position. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

• Supervise two student fellow cohorts and related community volunteer programs (40%)

  • Supervise ~15-20 student fellows and their programs in two issue areas from among those we support. Assigned cohorts will be based on the distribution of applicable knowledge and expertise among the staff.

  • Advise students on the ethics of community engagement, project management, and best practices in relevant programming areas.

• Organize Lighten Up, a campus move out fundraising program (30%)

  • Work with a team of professional staff including representatives from sustainability, custodial, res life, community partner organizations, and other divisions to execute the program.

  • Manage complex logistics including the processing and sorting of approximately 50,000 pounds of materials donated to the sale.

  • Supervise event staff and shift managers.

  • Coordinate the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of approximately 50 student workers.

  • Facilitate community partners’ involvement for this program, including developing Memorandums of Understanding with all partners, and scheduling and managing volunteer teams.

  • Budget responsibility: Responsibly manage and distribute sale revenue, about $40,000 per year.

  • Note: This program is being reenvisioned in 2026-27, and the employee’s role may evolve as a result of the recommendations emerging from that process.

• Manage Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Program (10%)

  • Lead the ASB program staff team including 5th year and operations coordinator.

  • Recruit and train trip leaders and participants.

  • Manage relationships with host organizations.

  • Ensure safety and risk management considerations are accounted for.

  • Responsible for a budget of ~$10,000.

• Coordinate Summer Internships program (10%)

  • Work collaboratively with Career Center staff, community partner staff, and CCCE Operations Coordinator to develop, post, and promote summer internship positions with existing local CCCE community partner organizations.

• Additional Cross-Cutting Responsibilities (10%)

  • Collaborate with the CCCE staff team to help implement center-wide operations and programs as needed.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

• Work occurs in a normal office environment, except during the Lighten Up event where work requires the employee to move and lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly and work in outdoor and un-air-conditioned environments.

• Be a campus driver, drive minivans and 15-passenger vans.

Education/Experience/Skills:

Required:

• College degree (bachelor's degree) and at least 3 years of full-time related professional experience.

• Experience coaching, mentoring, or supervising adolescents/young adults/college students.

• Skills and experience in the following areas: collaborative leadership, ethics of community engagement, project management, supervision and mentorship of young adults.

• Excellent interpersonal and relational skills, including sensitivity to interpersonal dynamics and capacity to build trust among collaborators engaged in complex issues.

• Extremely strong professional judgement.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Excellent on-the-fly problem solving skills, working well under pressure.

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
