Job Description:

The Deputy Inspector – Disciplinary Appeals manages an extremely important set of processes for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) and must effectively collaborate with multiple constituents. The Deputy Inspector – Disciplinary Appeals is the person primarily responsible for the management and processing of incarcerated-persons misconduct appeals.

The Deputy Inspector – Disciplinary Appeals must be confident, collaborative, and detail oriented. They must have knowledge of law, law enforcement, and correctional-institution operations. They must be capable of conducting training sessions for appeals committees.

This position serves as the subject matter expert in the area of inmate disciplinary procedure appeals. Job duties include:

• Ensure compliance with timelines of the appeal responses and deadlines.

• Ensure established policies and procedures are followed at all correctional facilities.

• Consult with and advise agency staff at all levels regarding the appeal process and responses within the law and draft appeal responses.

• Serve as the Department’s liaison with U.S. District Courts, the Attorney General’s Office and other State agencies regarding inmate appeal matters.

• Additional duties as assigned within the job classification.

 

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, human services or related field, plus two years’ corrections experience; OR Associate's degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, human services or related field plus four years’ experience; OR six years corrections experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with inmate disciplinary or similar process. Experience writing policy documents and reports.  Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint or similar computer programs. Completion of leadership development programs/training.  

Other: Must have a valid driver's license. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program to include CPR, first aid, and self-defense tactics.
