About the Role
Bring your energy, practical skills and passion for great service aboard as a Deckhand with Island Connections NT. In this casual position, you'll play a vital role in delivering safe, smooth and memorable journeys for every guest.
This varied, hands-on position combines vessel operations with genuine guest connection. One moment you'll be welcoming passengers and answering questions, then handling lines, preparing gangways, managing stock or helping keep the vessel presentation-ready.
What You'll Be Doing
- Welcome guests, assist with luggage & enquiries, and keep everyone informed about service updates
- Sell ferry tickets, beverages and onboard products while identifying opportunities to up-sell and cross-sell
- Help deliver safe arrivals and departures by handling lines, positioning, and securing gangways & ramps under the Vessel Master’s direction
- Inspect ropes and deck equipment, promptly reporting defects or damage
- Keep the vessel, pontoons and crew areas clean, organised and ready for service
- Maintain onboard stock, rotate products, complete requisitions and stocktakes, minimising waste
- Handle cash, tickets and freight accurately & securely in line with procedures
- Complete logs, checklists, timesheets and operational paperwork accurately and on time
- Support emergency procedures and uphold maritime & workplace safety requirements
Requirements
About You
You’re a dependable, motivated and proactive team player who enjoys helping people and getting involved. You communicate confidently, stay composed when things get busy, and take pride in delivering friendly, professional service.
Safety is always front of mind, and you’re quick to spot and report potential issues. You learn quickly, pay attention to detail, and are happy to balance customer-facing responsibilities with practical deck, cleaning, stock and administration duties. Above all, you’ll bring a positive attitude, professional presentation and genuine enthusiasm for tourism and life on the water.
The successful candidate will have the physical capacity to work on their feet for extended periods and safely lift, move and store stock weighing up to 20 kg. They will hold full working rights in Australia.
Qualifications and Experience
- Elements of Shipboard Safety
- Ochre Card (Working with Children Check), or Interim Statutory Declaration & Police Clearance
- First Aid & CPR (highly regarded)
- 1+ years of customer service & cash-handling experience
- Sound knowledge of the region, vessels and rope handling
- A minimum of 6 months’ sea time (highly regarded)
- Basic computer skills and experience with product rotation and stock control
