Job Description Summary

The Community Relations Specialist for the Weld County District Attorney's Office is responsible for a number of duties, including the facilitation and maintenance of all community contacts for the District Attorney's Office and serving as a liaison with the public and the media. This position is a management position in the District Attorney's Office.

Job Description

Prevention Programming - 10%

  • Responsible for maintaining prevention programs within the D.A.'s Office, including researching and designing Fraud Alerts.
  • Research, develop and provide trainings on prevention topics, such as identity theft, sexting, social media safety and cyberbullying.


Community Programs - 10%

  • Work to further the image of the District Attorney's Office by pursuing opportunities for employees to be involved in the local community through community service projects (i.e. school supply drives, food drives, reading to students, Mock Trial team coaching and judging, etc.).


Media Communications - 30%

  • Responsible for all communication, proactive and reactive, with media outlets throughout Colorado and beyond, including weekly case tracking summaries, press releases, opinion and editorial pieces, and media requests/inquiries.
  • Work with the District Attorney and Assistant District Attorney on responses to CORA (Colorado Open Records Act) and CCJRA (Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act) requests.
  • Update and maintain social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter and other appropriate platforms.
  • Maintain, and revise when needed, a protocol for high-profile incidents.
  • Develop and write talking points for radio, TV and print interviews.
  • Participate in local and statewide PIO (Public Information Officer) groups.


Website Administration - 20%

  • Responsible for administering the website for the Weld County District Attorney's Office to include, but not limited to:
  • Posting press releases to the "news section".
  • Creating content, not aimed necessarily for media outlets (i.e. feature stories on the office or employees, feature videos, sentences on cases that are not high-profile, etc.).
  • Posting weekly case tracking summaries.
  • Ensuring adherence to legally required accessibility standards and requirements.
  • Maintaining and refreshing department pages, such as Victim Witness Unit, Diversion and Resources.
  • Developing informational brochures for the community, including sexting, social media safety, identity theft, etc.
  • Employee will also be a member of the Weld County Web Advisory Group.


External/Internal Communications - 30%

  • Responsible for communicating important events, policies and programs to office employees.
  • Assist in managing emails and calls that are directed to the general email address and phone extension.
  • Keep track of presentations, board memberships, volunteer activities and 10-plus year sentences of Deputy District Attorneys for office statistics.
  • Arrange trainings by attorneys for law enforcement, including Legislative and Case Law Updates.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism (preferably broadcast), public relations, communications, criminal justice, political science or related field required.


Preferred Experience

  • Employment experience in similar field preferred.
  • Advanced communication skills, including the ability to write concisely and persuasively and speak in public.
  • The candidate must be able to organize thoughts well, react creatively in pressure situations and manage many duties simultaneously. Organizational and time management skills are vital.
  • Experience with Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, etc.) and Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint) is preferred.
  • Video production, including script writing and editing, is preferred, but not required.
  • General understanding of the criminal justice process and the role of the District Attorney's Office is preferred, but not required.


This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
