  • Full-time, Continuing position  

  • Salary Level HEW 7 + 17% Superannuation 

  • Based at the Melbourne CBD campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University 

 

About the role 

The Careers Consultant provides professional career development services to support vocational and higher education students in their transition to employment and further career opportunities. Through individual consultations, workshops, events and career education initiatives, the role delivers high-quality, student-centred advice that enhances employability and career readiness. 
 
Working collaboratively within a cross-disciplinary team and in partnership with academic colleges, program areas and other stakeholders, the Careers Consultant contributes to the development and delivery of integrated career services. The role also coordinates, trains, coaches and supervises casual student staff to support Career Connect, ensuring effective service delivery that enhances the student experience. 

 

To be successful in this position, you will have:  

  • Formal qualifications (as specified below) and significant relevant work experience and demonstrated expertise in individual careers counselling.  

  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively consult and build relationships with academic staff, employers and other internal and external stakeholders, and to provide career guidance and support to students with complex needs. 

  • Knowledge of career development theory and practice, the principles of learning & teaching and demonstrated ability to apply these to the development and delivery of workshops, programs, curriculum and resources. 

  • Strong knowledge of the graduate labour market and the Vocational and Higher Education sector and the issues that will impact upon the delivery and development of careers education and employment services to final year students and graduates. 

  • Proven ability to think and work collaboratively, laterally, flexibly and effectively in a busy multi-disciplinary team environment 

  • Demonstrated experience leading, supporting, and developing casual or student staff, fostering a positive team culture and ensuring consistent service delivery 

  • High levels of emotional intelligence and interpersonal effectiveness, with well-developed team-building skills and a proven ability to motivate, engage and align individuals and teams to achieve positive service and performance outcomes. 

  • Other duties consistent with the level of the position and focus on the group, as required 

  • A membership of relevant professional careers association(s) (e.g. National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (NAGCAS) is highly desirable  

 

Please note:  

A post-graduate qualification in Careers Counselling/Education/Development is a requirement for this role.  
The Careers Consultant will need to have a professional careers qualification recognised by the Career Industry Council of Australia. 
 

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check.
