Join the UNH TRIO Upward Bound team for a short-term opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the college-going journey of high school students. We are seeking an Academic Year Advisor to provide advising, mentoring, and college-access support to students in Manchester High Schools. This is a temporary, part-time position of approximately 25 hours per week at $25 per hour, anticipated to run through the end of the first semester for the local high schools (mid-January).

Since 1966, UNH TRIO Upward Bound has helped several thousand New Hampshire young people earn college degrees and improve their options for successful careers. Our program begins during the Academic Year where students will meet with advisers twice monthly in their schools and receive academic, career, and college assistance and guidance. In addition to in-school advising, students receive college & career guidance during grade-level workshops, have the opportunity to attend monthly Saturday Tutoring Academies at UNH and college, educational and cultural visits throughout New England. The program continues during the Summer Academic Academy where program participants get to experience residence hall life while living with other Upward Bound students on the UNH Durham campus Monday through Friday. They take courses led by highly qualified teachers to prepare them for the upcoming academic year. In addition, students will get support through tutoring, creative problem-solving challenges, and culturally enriching activities.

The role of the Academic Year Advisor is to, at specific target schools, provide direct service delivery to Upward Bound participants. Services include academic advising, tutoring, career and college exploration, college entrance exam prep, guidance with the college admission and financial aid process, and financial and economic literacy. Advisors are responsible for meeting project objectives within their target area.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain a regular school visitation schedule.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school and agency personnel at their target schools.

  • Coordinate with target School Counselors to provide project services to participants. Specific services include: Clarifying career interests and providing career information, assisting with school course selection, providing SAT/ACT preparation, providing information on colleges and the college admissions process, providing information on federal financial aid programs and scholarships, assisting participants with the college admissions and financial aid process, providing connections to financial & economic literacy resources, providing connections to tutoring, providing general academic/college/career mentoring for all students.

  • Have knowledge of NH postsecondary programs and their admissions requirements.

  • Have knowledge of federal financial aid programs and scholarships.

  • Participate in all scheduled staff meetings and training.

  • Provide ongoing assessment of progress by submitting required records, summaries, logs, etc. and attend in-office days as scheduled.

  • Other duties as assigned by the project director.

Requirements:
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or related field

  • Experience working with high school students and families in a teaching, counseling, or related position

  • Desire to help disadvantaged youth succeed

  • Sensitivity and maturity level to successfully work in a program with high school aged students

  • Ability to interact with diverse constituencies including program & UNH staff, parents/guardians, and students

  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience working with students from low-income backgrounds, multiethnic backgrounds and/or who are potential first-generation college graduates

  • Experience in overcoming obstacles similar to those of the UB-eligible population

  • Experience participating in a TRIO, or similar, pre-college program

  • Familiarity with schools, preferably within the target area

  • Demonstrated knowledge of college admissions and financial aid process

  • Experience in classroom instruction or tutoring (specifically in our core subject areas)

  • Proficiency with computers, software, and social media

Compensation Pay Range:
