We are seeking a high-efficiency, adaptable, Java-centric AI Full-Cycle Engineer. The ideal candidate will have experience developing medium-to-high complexity products and providing critical production support.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform system analysis, assess risks, develop technical design and implementation strategies, deliver high quality software.
Have a holistic view of processes and systems involved in taking patient samples from order to result in a multi-product clinical laboratory.
Debug and perform root cause analysis for product defects and issues, as well as production support, while improving system observability and monitoring to prevent future regressions.
Create and maintain comprehensive software documentation (software specification, test protocols and results, etc).
Collaborate with the team on solutioning, knowledge share and efficient delivery.
Drive adaptiablity via AI and leverage agentic AI to build adapters that power automation.
This role regularly involves Protected Health Information (PHI). You must complete all required HIPAA/PHI privacy and security training within the first 30 days of hire and maintain current status on all Natera training requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of 10 years of experience in both server-side (back-end) and front-end development for complex n-tier systems, with at least 4 years focused on complex systems and integrations.
Back-end: Minimum of 5 years of recent, hands-on experience with Java, preferably using open-source frameworks such as Spring.
Front-end: Recent hands on experience with front-end development.
APIs: Recent hands-on experience working with and developing REST APIs.
Database: Extensive working knowledge of relational databases, experience using frameworks like Hibernate/JPA.
Quality: Recent hands on experience with test design and automation.
The "AI Glue": Experience using AI tools (e.g. Claude Code) not just for boilerplate, but for accelerating the mapping of complex data structures between systems.
Adaptability: Proven track record of pivoting between tech stacks based on business needs (e.g., bridging modern AI agents with legacy JSP/Java architectures).
BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
A solution- and continuous-improvement-oriented mindset with proactivity in troubleshooting.
Strong communication skills.
Willingness and ability to rapidly learn new practices, languages, and subject matter.
Excellent understanding of core software engineering principles: Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), SOLID, etc.
Experience with containers (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
Experience working with various AI tools (e.g. Claude Code)
Experience with distributed version control systems (e.g., Gitlab) and familiarity with branching strategies.
Experience with message brokers/queues (e.g., Apache Kafka, AWS SQS) is a plus.
Experience with JSP and JavaScript is preferred.
Familiarity with software life cycle management tools (e.g., Jira).
Ability to work effectively with people across multiple time zones.
Experience developing software in a regulated environment is a plus.

Natera is standing up a new AI-native engineering team within our CMP (Case Management Platform) organization, focused on transforming how patient samples move from order to result. This team operates with a different model than traditional engineering groups: small, senior, AI-centric, product-focused, and built to move fast.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be one of the founding technical leaders of this team. Your mission is to accelerate accessioning automation; the process by which requisition forms, samples, and kits are transformed into lab instructions; by applying modern AI and intelligent document processing (IDP) to eliminate manual transcription and unlock a multi-million-dollar annual savings opportunity.
You'll be building AI-powered services that integrate with multiple mature systems. You'll own deliverables end-to-end.
Lead the technical design and delivery of AI-native accessioning automation services across paper and electronic requisition forms.
Build fast, ship independently. Operate in small, high-autonomy pods. Drive deliverables from prototype to production without waiting for consensus.
Apply AI pragmatically. Use LLMs, vision models, OCR, and IDP frameworks to solve real accessioning problems.
Own the product outcome, not just the code. Partner directly with Accessioning Operations, Product, and Engineering teams to understand workflows and measure impact in throughput and cost savings.

10+ years of software engineering experience building production systems that handle real business processes or data workflows.

The Vice President of Laboratory Software Engineering is an enterprise executive role responsible for the strategy, modernization, and delivery of informatics platforms that power sample accessioning, order and sample tracking, and end-to-end workflow orchestration across both wet and dry laboratories.
This role leads an organization of approximately 200 people and supports multiple business units, including Oncology Minimal Residual Disease (MRD), Oncology Comprehensive Genomic Profiling (CGP), Early Cancer Detection (ECD), Women’s Health (WH), and Organ Health (OH).
Operating in a CLIA- and CAP-certified clinical laboratory environment with FDA-regulated diagnostics, the VP will lead the transformation of a fully homegrown informatics ecosystem. This leader is accountable for defining enterprise platform strategy, driving large-scale modernization, and making critical build-vs-buy decisions to ensure scalability, reliability, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.
In the first 90 days, the VP is expected to build strong relationships with laboratory, product, engineering, quality, and regulatory stakeholders; develop a deep understanding of existing informatics platforms and laboratory workflows; assess organizational strengths and gaps; and establish credibility with laboratory users through direct engagement, including onsite interaction. The leader should also identify near-term risks and opportunities while defining clear principles for platform modernization.
Within the first year, the VP is expected to define and begin executing a multi-year enterprise informatics roadmap, make key architectural and build-vs-buy decisions, align the organization around standardized platforms, and demonstrate measurable improvements in scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency. Success will be reflected in stronger partnership with laboratory operations, improved readiness for regulatory audits, and tangible progress toward a modern, enterprise-grade informatics ecosystem that supports current and future business growth.
Enterprise Informatics Strategy & Platform Modernization
Define and own the enterprise laboratory informatics strategy spanning sample accessioning, order management, sample tracking, and workflow orchestration across wet labs, dry labs, and downstream data consumers.
Lead the modernization of a predominantly homegrown informatics landscape, including architectural redesign, platform consolidation, and technology standardization.
Drive strategic build-vs-buy decisions, including vendor evaluation, platform selection, and long-term ownership models.
Establish and execute a multi-year roadmap that supports enterprise growth, new product introductions, and evolving regulatory expectations.
Clinical Operations Enablement & Scalability
Ensure informatics platforms reliably support high-throughput, mission-critical laboratory operations across Oncology, Women’s Health, and Organ Health portfolios.
Partner closely with laboratory operations, product, R&D, quality, and regulatory teams to optimize workflows, increase automation, and reduce operational friction.
Enable rapid onboarding of new assays and laboratory workflows while maintaining system stability, data integrity, and compliance.
Define and track KPIs related to system performance, availability, throughput, and operational efficiency.
Leadership & Organization Development
Lead, mentor, and scale a high-performing organization of approximately 200 professionals across laboratory applications engineering, workflow platforms, data systems, validation, and operations support.
Build strong leadership bench strength and succession plans across a geographically distributed organization.
Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, customer focus, and continuous improvement.
Evolve organizational structures and operating models toward enterprise platforms rather than siloed, business-unit–specific systems.
Regulatory, Quality & Risk Management
Ensure informatics platforms meet regulatory and quality requirements, including CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, FDA-regulated diagnostics (including LDTs), and applicable GxP standards.
Own or closely partner on Computer System Validation (CSV), audit readiness, change management, and system lifecycle governance.
Establish policies and controls to ensure data integrity, traceability, security, and privacy across the laboratory informatics ecosystem.
Serve as a senior informatics leader during regulatory inspections and audits.
Cross-Functional & Executive Partnership
Act as a key executive partner to laboratory leadership, product management, engineering, quality, regulatory, and commercial teams.
Translate complex scientific, operational, and regulatory needs into scalable informatics solutions.
Communicate platform strategy, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to executive leadership and other stakeholders.
Maintain strong relationships with laboratory users through regular engagement, including onsite interaction in San Carlos, CA and Austin, TX as needed.
Required
15+ years of progressive experience in laboratory informatics, enterprise software platforms, or large-scale systems supporting regulated, mission-critical environments.
Demonstrated success leading large, complex organizations (100+ people), preferably at the VP or equivalent senior leadership level.
Deep understanding of laboratory workflows, including sample accessioning, order and sample tracking, and wet-lab and dry-lab orchestration.
Proven experience modernizing legacy or homegrown platforms, including leading major architectural transformations and build-vs-buy decisions.
Strong executive presence with the ability to influence across functions and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred
Experience supporting CLIA- and CAP-certified clinical laboratories.
Familiarity with FDA-regulated diagnostics, LDTs, and regulatory submissions.
Hands-on experience with CSV, audit readiness, and regulated system lifecycle management.
Background in genomics, oncology diagnostics, or other high-throughput laboratory environments.
This is a remote role. Due to the close partnership with laboratory operations and users, periodic travel to San Carlos, CA and Austin, TX is expected.

Position Summary
We are seeking an accomplished Principal Software Engineer to shape the future of lab software platforms powering high-throughput, regulated laboratory operations. In this role, you will define technical direction across complex, distributed systems and lead the evolution of software applications that drive lab automation, efficiency, and operational excellence.
You will operate as a hands-on technical leader with deep ownership, from architecture and design through critical implementation to influencing lab operations processes, engineering standards, and long-term platform strategy. Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
Own and evolve the architecture of large-scale, mission-critical systems supporting lab automation, workflow orchestration, and decision support.
Define and enforce architectural patterns for modular, distributed systems, including modernizing legacy and off-the-shelf LIMS platforms to cloud-native architectures.
Make high-impact technical decisions balancing scalability, reliability, security, cost, and regulatory constraints.
Establish engineering best practices across performance, observability, testing, security, and operational readiness.
Mentor senior engineers and managers through design reviews, technical guidance, and reusable frameworks.
Drive adoption of Generative AI to improve developer productivity and software quality.
Lead the application of AI/ML capabilities to improve lab throughput, TAT, automation reliability, and operator experience.
Software Engineering Execution
Lead and contribute across the full software development lifecycle—from problem framing and architecture through implementation, deployment, and production support.
Plan and execute complex migrations from legacy and off-the-shelf lab systems to the new strategic platform, including data migration, integration cutovers, validation strategy, and rollback planning, while minimizing downtime and operational risk in a regulated environment.
Build and review robust backend services and modern frontend applications using Python, TypeScript, React, and Next.js.
Stabilize and scale existing LIMS solutions while leading strategic modernization to a new technology stack.
Design and operate systems on AWS with a focus on availability, fault tolerance, cost efficiency, and security.
Advance CI/CD practices with infrastructure-as-code, automated testing, and production-grade observability.
Cross-functional Collaboration
Partner closely with Product, UX, Scientists, and Lab Operations to translate complex workflows into scalable, intuitive systems.
Lead technical discussions that influence product roadmaps and platform strategy.
Foster a culture of engineering excellence, ownership, and continuous improvement across teams.
Qualifications
12-15+ years of experience in developing software applications.
Proven experience with programming languages such as Python, Java, NextJS, and TypeScript.
Solid understanding of relational databases and proficiency in SQL programming, with a preference for MySQL or PostgreSQL.
Solid understanding of non-relational and graph databases.
Proficiency in leveraging AWS services, including Lambda, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, and Glue.
Proficiency in infrastructure as code (IaC).
Proficiency in messaging frameworks such as Kafka.
Strong quality assurance mindset with a commitment to delivering robust and reliable software.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.

We are seeking a skilled, driven, and adaptable Software Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience developing medium-to-high complexity products and providing critical production support. This range reflects a good-faith estimate of the base pay we reasonably expect to offer at the time of hire. Final compensation will vary based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.
