Summary of Job Duties:
The Welder I performs skilled journey-level welding, fabrication, repair, and metal work in support of university facilities, infrastructure, equipment, and construction-related maintenance. This position is responsible for fabricating, assembling, modifying, and repairing metal components using approved welding processes and industry standards.The position requires independent judgment, safe work practices, strong technical skill, the ability to interpret drawings and work orders, and coordination with supervisors, project managers, and other trades. Work may include structural supports, railings, brackets, frames, gates, equipment repairs, piping supports, metal panels, shop-fabricated assemblies, and other campus facility needs.
Regular, reliable and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Four or more years of welding, fabrication, metal repair, or directly related skilled trade experience
- Current AWS Certification required at time of hire
- Completion of an accredited welding program, trade school program, apprenticeship, or equivalent combination of training and experience
- Proficiency in multiple welding processes, including MIG, TIG, and Stick welding
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five or more years of journey-level welding and fabrication experience
- Experience performing welding and fabrication work in a facilities, higher education, institutional, industrial, municipal, or construction environment
- Experience with structural steel, pipe supports, handrails, frames, gates, equipment repair, and field fabrication
- Experience using a computerized maintenance management system, such as FAMIS or similar CMMS
- OSHA 10, OSHA 30, hot work, forklift, aerial lift, rigging, or related safety training
- Additional AWS endorsements or process-specific welding certifications
- Experience coordinating work with multiple trades on renovation, maintenance, or construction projects
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of welding methods, including MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored welding
- Knowledge of metal fabrication practices, layout, fit-up, cutting, grinding, and finishing techniques
- Knowledge of AWS welding standards and accepted industry practices
- Knowledge of welding safety, hot work procedures, PPE requirements, and OSHA safety practices
- Knowledge of proper use and maintenance of welding machines, cutting equipment, torches, grinders, and fabrication tools
- Knowledge of metal types, material properties, fasteners, hardware, and fabrication materials
- Knowledge of blueprint reading, shop drawings, technical specifications, and work order interpretation
- Knowledge of quality control practices for weld inspection and finished fabrication work
- Basic knowledge of building systems, facility maintenance, and construction support work
- Skilled in performing quality welding using multiple welding processes
- Skilled in fabricating, assembling, modifying, and repairing metal components
- Skilled in reading blueprints, sketches, dimensions, and technical drawings
- Skilled in measuring, cutting, laying out, and preparing materials accurately
- Skilled in inspecting welds and finished work for quality, safety, and durability
- Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, cutting equipment, and shop machinery
- Skilled in troubleshooting fabrication problems and making field adjustments
- Skilled in communicating with supervisors, coworkers, customers, and other trades
- Skilled in documenting work performed, materials used, and project status
- Skilled in working safely in shop, field, occupied building, and construction environments
- Ability to perform journey-level welding and fabrication work with limited supervision.
- Ability to apply AWS standards and safe welding practices in daily work
- Ability to work from drawings, work orders, field measurements, and verbal instructions
- Ability to plan and sequence work to complete assignments efficiently
- Ability to identify unsafe conditions and take appropriate corrective action
