The Role
The VP, Pricing, Protection, India is one of the leaders of Pacific Life Re’s India Protection business and a member of the India Protection Market Leadership Committee (PMLC) that sets our strategic and tactical objectives and plays a key role in the overall success of the India business, including how we can leverage our core capabilities to shape and achieve our market strategy and delivering an aligned functional strategy.
Specific local pricing responsibilities are for the performance of the India pricing function, incorporating all aspects of the pricing process including setting of bases, development of pricing terms and management of the pricing pipeline.
The role is a core member of the global Protection Pricing Functional Leadership Team (FLT), with shared accountability for executing global pricing strategy, shaping functional priorities, and driving consistent execution and capability uplift across regions. The incumbent is expected to operate as a peer leader within the global Pricing FLT, constructively challenging ideas, influencing outcomes beyond their home market, and representing regional perspectives while acting in the best interests of the global Protection Pricing function.
The incumbent will have a deep understanding of client requirements and play a key role in developing solutions that appropriately balance the needs of Pacific Life Re and the client. The incumbent will also support the AVP, Client Solutions, Protection, India in building and maintaining relationships with clients and partners in India.
The individual will lead the India Pricing team and work closely with other functions including Client Solutions, R&D, Underwriting & Claims Solutions and Services, and Corporate Actuarial areas.
The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing risk management processes, ensuring that all quotes comply with Pricing standards and that appropriate processes and documentation standards are in place.
In addition, they will also be expected to collaborate with the Divisional Pricing team (supported by the Global Pricing team) which is responsible for the oversight and support of pricing across Pacific Life Re. This will include collaboration in areas such as prioritisation and co-ordination of global projects (e.g. actuarial model changes), co-ordination of information for quotes needing to be approved within Pacific Life and development of various aspects of the underlying bases such as non-decrement terms of trade.
Finally, the incumbent will be a part of the broader Pacific Life Re Leadership Team.
Duties
Responsible for the timely and accurate delivery of pricing terms to clients for both in force and new business opportunities, ensuring high technical standards of experience analyses and the production of high-quality pricing papers.
Play a key leadership role in the PMLC through contributions to the discussion and decision making with regards to setting and executing market strategy and key business decisions.
Leading the Pricing team effectively to include:
- Managing workflow,
- Building, coaching and developing team members to achieve team and company goals as well as individual performance standards; and
- Building and maintaining effective relationships with key stakeholders at all levels of the business.
- Ensuring robust governance frameworks and internal controls consistent with global appetite
Act as an active member of the Protection Pricing Functional Leadership Team, with responsibility for:
- Executing the global Protection Pricing strategy and roadmap
- Shaping and role‑modelling the desired pricing culture, including technical excellence, commercial mindset, and strong risk discipline
- Driving consistency of pricing standards, governance, and decision‑making frameworks across regions
- Sponsoring and, where appropriate, leading global or cross‑regional initiatives (e.g. methodology changes, model development, process improvement, talent initiatives)
Support the VP, Protection and AVP, Client Solutions in building and maintaining effective relationships with clients and promoting the Pacific Life Re brand. The VP, Pricing will leverage their technical knowledge for the benefit of our clients through client meetings, published research and presentations at conferences and seminars.
Qualifications & Expertise
- Deep experience in operating in market facing roles in (re)insurance. Experience in the markets that PL Re focuses on would be preferred and global experience would be considered an advantage
- At least 10 years’ experience in life (re)insurance pricing including general working knowledge of capital and accounting bases.
- Ability to set and deliver compelling strategies in a challenging business environment.
- Skilled influencer/communicator with demonstrable confidence, maturity and gravitas in a wide range of settings, including building and maintaining strong client relationships.
- Highly commercial and able to negotiate with skill in challenging situations whilst maintaining the integrity of working relationships.
- Strong managerial and influencing skills with an ability to operate at all levels.
- Demonstrable track record of effective leadership and people management, motivation and development.
- Demonstrated ability to make high-quality and well-balanced decisions in the face of ambiguity.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of risk frameworks and controls.
- Proven track record of delivering major strategic change programmes.
