The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) trains doctors who put patients at the centre of their exemplary care. The School, which offers both undergraduate and graduate programmes, is named after local philanthropist Tan Sri Dato Lee Kong Chian. Established in 2010 by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in partnership with Imperial College London, LKCMedicine aims to be a model for innovative medical education and a centre for transformative research. The School’s primary clinical partner is the National Healthcare Group, a leader in public healthcare recognised for the quality of its medical expertise, facilities and teaching. The School is transitioning to an NTU medical school ahead of the 2028 successful conclusion of the NTU-Imperial partnership to set up a Joint Medical School. In August 2024, we welcomed our first intake of the NTU MBBS programme, that has been recently enhanced to include themes like precision medicine and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, with an expanded scope in the medical humanities. Graduates from the five-year undergraduate medical degree programme will have a strong understanding of the scientific basis of medicine, with an emphasis on technology, data science and the humanities.

The Veterinarian will be responsible for providing high-quality medical care to a range of laboratory animal species, ensuring their health and well-being through preventative care, diagnostics, treatment, and surgical procedures. This role requires a dedicated professional committed to upholding the highest standards of veterinary medicine and animal welfare.

Responsibilities:

Prevention, Diagnosis, Control and Treatment of Disease

• Assessment of sick and dead animals, including necropsy of dead animals if needed.
• Prescribing and administration of treatment/euthanasia of sick animals.
• Implement, manage and continuously refine the sentinel animal health monitoring system.
• Review all incoming and outgoing animal health review and approval. 
• Addressing nutritional requirements when required.
• Oversee quarantine protocols, species-specific nutritional requirements, and bio-exclusion controls.

Pain and distress- prevention, minimization and alleviation

• Advising staff and researchers about the use of analgesics and anaesthetics in animals, including dispensing of above-mentioned drugs/agents.
• Keeping records of all drugs provided to researchers/staff.
• Procurement of drugs or agents used in veterinary medicine. Keeping records of veterinary drugs provided to staff and researchers.
• Maintain procurement, inventory, and strict controlled drug logbooks in compliance with university and statutory standards.
• Oversee environmental enrichment and husbandry programs that reduce stress and enhance physiological stability.
• Ensure that all welfare concerns regarding the use of animals within the facility meets regulatory guidelines. Pain and distress must be minimised or eliminated when possible.

Assisting the researchers on procedures and general equipment usage

• Train the researchers regarding the safe use of euthanasia chambers and anaesthetic equipment.
• Ensuring that all anaesthetic equipment are maintained and calibrated on a regular basis.
• Ensure that all physical means of euthanasia are carried out appropriately without any welfare concerns.
• Advise the researchers and staff on the aseptic surgical methodologies, fluid administration and withdrawal volumes and breeding colony maintenance.
• Conduct Responsible Care and Use of Animals (RCULAC) and Responsible Care and Use of Fish (RCUF) Practical courses for new users.
• Review RCULAC online theory course to ensure that information provided is accurate and up to date.
• Provide expert consultation on complex surgical procedures, aseptic techniques, post-operative management, and emergency critical care.
• Design, coordinate, and deliver theoretical and practical training modules, including RCULAC and RCUF practical courses for research personnel.

IACUC

• Address all regulatory requirements of a veterinarian as defined by the NACLAR Guidelines. This includes sitting on the IACUC committee and reviewing animal use protocol, facility and program evaluations, monitoring of IACUC compliance and advising researchers regarding sick/moribund animal, humane endpoints and treatment plans/euthanasia. In cases of non-compliance with IACUC protocols, to work with the IACUC secretariat on addressing such concerns.
• Implement researcher/staff training sessions to enhance ongoing training and development of researchers and facility staff.

Requirements:

• A degree in veterinary medicine
• AVS licensed veterinarian with 2-3 years working experience, preferably with experience in laboratory animals veterinary care in research setting in academia
• Restricted license veterinarian or veterinarian eligible for restricted license and with at least 2-3 years working experience in laboratory animals may be considered.
