About the US Reinsurance team:

Our team operates across our London and Bermuda platforms, writing a range of Property Treaty reinsurance products for clients in the United States and those domiciled there with worldwide exposure. We are a market leader and with this comes the need for product innovation, excellent client and broker service and the ability to deploy meaningful capacity. 

Our team has an ambition to build the portfolio going forward, both within and outside our existing areas of expertise.  This will require our underwriters to demonstrate an adaptable mindset, strong analytical capabilities, a commercial approach and an entrepreneurial attitude.

The opportunity

The Underwriter role presents a significant opportunity to utilise your technical ability, build relationships with key US clients and develop a rewarding career in a  pre-eminent underwriting team. You will help continue to build Hiscox’s position as a market leader in Property Reinsurance in the US. To do so, you will need the skills and intellect to quickly grasp the fundamentals and be capable of applying the same irrespective of the nature of the risk before you. Moreover, you will need the ability to build and develop links to the broking and underwriting communities.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the underwriting and management of a portfolio of US Property Treaty reinsurance business, contributing to the profitable growth of the account.
• Analyse treaty submissions, pricing information, catastrophe modelling output and portfolio data to support underwriting decisions.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients through regular interaction, participation in meetings and market engagement activities.
• Attend client, broker and market meetings, helping represent Hiscox Re and develop a strong understanding of client strategies, portfolios and underwriting needs.
• Collaborate closely with colleagues across both the Bermuda and London platforms to evaluate risks, share market insight and support portfolio management decisions.
• Develop expertise across the full underwriting lifecycle, including risk assessment, pricing, portfolio management and capital allocation.
• Work alongside internal stakeholders including catastrophe modelling, actuarial, portfolio management and third-party capital teams to support underwriting decisions and portfolio optimisation.
• Contribute to the deployment of both Hiscox and partner capital, helping match risk opportunities with the most appropriate sources of capital.
• Support the continual development of underwriting tools, analytics and technology solutions, including initiatives that enhance underwriting efficiency and decision-making.
• Participate in portfolio reviews, renewal strategy discussions and market research activities to identify opportunities for growth and innovation.
• Over time, develop the capability to independently manage client relationships, negotiate transactions and represent the business externally.

What we’re looking for

• A motivated insurance or reinsurance professional with approximately 2-5 years' experience, ideally within property insurance, property reinsurance, treaty reinsurance, underwriting, broking or a related analytical discipline.
• We would also welcome applications from high-potential early-career professionals who demonstrate exceptional analytical capability, commercial awareness and a desire to build a long-term underwriting career.
• An interest in contributing to the development and growth of the US portfolio at Hiscox Re.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex risk information and draw sound commercial conclusions.
• An interest in portfolio management and the ability to think beyond individual transactions to understand portfolio-level risk and performance.

• Ability to assess and challenge catastrophe modelling, actuarial and portfolio analytics to support underwriting decisions.

• Experience supporting the evaluation and management of reinsurance portfolios across different geographies, clients, brokers and lines of business.
• A solid understanding of reinsurance underwriting principles, risk selection, pricing concepts and treaty structures across proportional and non-proportional products.
• Familiarity with catastrophe modelling tools (e.g. RMS, AIR and internal models) would be advantageous, although training will be provided.
• Exposure to third-party capital or alternative capital structures would be beneficial but is not essential.
• Experience working with large datasets and analytical tools such as Excel, SQL, R, Python or similar, with a genuine interest in using data to support underwriting decisions.
• A collaborative team player with a proactive approach to learning and problem-solving.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with colleagues, brokers and clients.
