This temporary position is with NC Commerce - Tourism, Film, and Sports Development, located at I-85 N. Welcome Center / 231 Interstate I-85N, Norlina NC, Warren County 27563. 

Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $15 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application). 

Details of the Position:

The Visitor Services Program works in cooperation with strategic partners to strengthen the state's tourism industry by providing customer service and information on travel to and within North Carolina to visitors and potential visitors. The Welcome Center program maximizes the opportunities to increase visitor expenditures through responsive sales and marketing initiatives and quality personal customer service at points of entry to the state along interstate highways. Welcome Centers provide multiple travel services, such as providing travel information, planning trips, routing, distributing travel literature and making reservations for accommodations.

This temporary Travel Counselor/ Admin Associate could be a fun part-time role for the right candidate. Travel Counselors are public relations positions that serve the traveling public. The selected candidate for this role will:

* Greeting visitors, answering questions about the State of North Carolina and its tourist facilities
* Distribute information on attractions, events, accommodations; and providing highway route information.
* Travel counselors make hotel and motel reservations
* Maintain brochure display racks and back stock and order new and replacement brochures
* Participate in familiarization tours and sharing experiences with other employees
* Use available resources to satisfy visitor inquiries which includes giving occasional presentations to schools or civic groups
* Work Part-time hours, up to 32 hours per MONTH (8 hours per week) with Monday-Friday, rotating shifts, etc.). Sunday-Saturday varying - Weekend/holiday work required. Limited overnight travel

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

*    General knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations, sales and customer service

*    General knowledge of promotional and publicity media suitable for use in the development of the tourism industry

*    Ability to learn and communicate general tourism information, including basic information regarding attractions, events, accommodations, recreational, historical and geographic features of the state

*    Ability to assess and use tools available to provide customer service and complete assignments, including computers, Microsoft Office products and online search engines

*    Ability to read maps

*    Pleasant demeanor with the ability to communicate tactfully and be cordial with all types of people

*    Ability to compile information and communicate it accurately

*    Ability to make group presentations

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
