Overview
Due to continued growth across our public transport advisory business, particularly in bus and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) networks, AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Technical Director – Bus Operations & Planning. In this leadership role, you'll provide strategic and technical direction across a diverse portfolio of planning, operational, and infrastructure projects, helping clients deliver efficient, reliable, and customer-focused public transport networks.
Working closely with government agencies, operators, and project teams, you'll lead the development of innovative transport solutions, drive business growth, and shape the future of bus and multimodal transport systems across Australia.
Your role
- As the national lead for Bus Operations & Planning, you'll drive the growth of AtkinsRéalis' capability across Australia, helping shape the future of public transport through strategic leadership, business development, and technical excellence. You'll identify new opportunities, support major bids and proposals, and build strong relationships with transport agencies, operators, and industry stakeholders.
- You'll provide technical leadership across bus network planning, operations, ConOps development, fleet and depot strategy, interchange planning, franchising and procurement advice, and major event transport operations. Acting as Project Director or Technical Lead on key commissions, you'll oversee the delivery of business cases, operational modelling, strategic transport studies, and infrastructure planning projects.
- You'll also lead and mentor a growing team of specialists, foster collaboration across disciplines, and champion innovation in areas such as zero-emission fleet transition, digital planning tools, and integrated multimodal network design. This is an opportunity to build a market-leading national capability while leveraging AtkinsRéalis' global expertise and reputation.
About you
- Demonstrated experience in public transport planning, operations or advisory.
- Strong expertise in bus systems, BRT, or multimodal transport networks.
- Proven experience in; Bus network operations and business cases, strategic planning and client leadership.
- Experience with major event/public transport planning (e.g. Olympics, large venues).
- Knowledge of Australian transport agencies and regulatory environment.
- Exposure to international transit systems or advisory projects.
- Degree in Transport Planning, Engineering, or related discipline.
- Relevant professional accreditation (e.g. CPEng, RPEQ/RPEV, or equivalent) preferred.
