Senior Tailings Engineer 

Location: Site-Based at the Springer Site, Imlay, Nevada

The Springer site is an underground mining operation located near Imlay, Nevada. As the project continues to advance, effective engineering, monitoring, and management of tailings infrastructure are essential to supporting safe, compliant, and responsible mine development and operations.  

About the Role 

The Senior Tailings Engineer provides technical engineering support for the design, construction, operation, monitoring, and ongoing management of both conventional and dry-stack tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and associated water-management infrastructure at the Springer site.  

Working closely with Engineering, Projects, Construction, Operations, Environmental, Health and Safety, contractors, and specialist consultants, the Tailings Engineer helps ensure that tailings facilities are developed and managed in accordance with approved designs, regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company expectations. The role also evaluates facility performance, identifies risks, and develops practical engineering recommendations. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Provide technical engineering support for tailings storage facilities and associated water-management infrastructure. 

• Review designs, specifications, calculations, drawings, and technical reports prepared by consultants and contractors. 

• Develop engineering recommendations that consider facility performance, operational requirements, constructability, and risk. 

Construction Support 

• Provide technical support during foundation preparation, embankment construction, material placement, compaction, drainage installation, and related earthworks. 

• Review field conditions and work with the Engineer of Record and project teams to address technical questions or deviations from design assumptions. 

• Coordinate with Construction, Quality, Survey, and contractors to ensure technical requirements are understood and implemented. 

Monitoring & Performance 

• Support the development and implementation of tailings inspection, monitoring, instrumentation, and surveillance programs. 

• Review instrumentation data, field observations, water levels, and facility performance to identify trends or conditions requiring action. 

• Conduct regular inspections and document findings, recommendations, and required follow-up activities. 

Risk, Safety & Compliance 

• Identify, assess, and communicate technical risks associated with tailings and water-management infrastructure. 

• Support risk assessments, design reviews, emergency-preparedness activities, and change-management processes. 

• Help ensure tailings activities comply with applicable MSHA requirements, permits, regulatory requirements, approved plans, and company standards.  

Technical Documentation 

• Prepare and maintain technical reports, inspection records, monitoring summaries, drawings, calculations, and engineering recommendations. 

• Support the maintenance of design-basis documents, operating manuals, construction records, as-built information, and facility-management plans. 

• Track technical actions, recommendations, deficiencies, and corrective measures through completion. 

Stakeholder & Consultant Coordination 

• Coordinate technical activities with the Engineer of Record, specialist consultants, contractors, laboratories, and internal site teams. 

• Communicate tailings performance, risks, technical requirements, and required decisions to project and site leadership. 

• Support continuous improvement in tailings governance, monitoring, construction practices, documentation, and operational controls. 

Qualifications & Experience 

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline. 

• Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Tailings Engineering, or a related discipline is considered an asset. 

• Professional Engineer licensure in Nevada, or eligibility to obtain it, is preferred. 

• Minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience in a mining environment, including at least 5 years dedicated to Tailings Storage Facility design, construction, or operations. 

• Experience with both conventional and dry-stack Tailings Storage Facilities is preferred. 

• Experience interpreting geotechnical data, instrumentation results, engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports. 

• Familiarity with tailings risk management, construction quality assurance, water management, and facility surveillance. 

• Experience coordinating specialist consultants, contractors, laboratories, and multidisciplinary teams. 

• Ability to complete and maintain all required MSHA training and site-specific certifications. 

Skills & Competencies 

• Strong knowledge of tailings engineering, geotechnical principles, dam safety, and water-management practices. 

• Ability to analyze technical data and translate findings into practical engineering recommendations. 

• Ability to review technical designs, drawings, specifications, construction records, and monitoring information. 

• Strong technical writing, documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills. 

• Ability to identify technical risks and escalate concerns appropriately. 

• Proficiency with relevant engineering, geotechnical, and tailings modelling software, such as GeoStudio (SLOPE/W and SEEP/W), PLAXIS, FLAC, Rocscience applications, or equivalent tools.  

• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage consultants, field activities, and technical deliverables.

Working Conditions 

• This is a primarily site-based role at the Springer site in Imlay, Nevada. 

• Work involves a combination of office-based engineering and regular field inspections. 

• Requires access to active construction, tailings, water-management, and operational areas. 

• The position may involve exposure to outdoor conditions, uneven terrain, dust, noise, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions. 

• Required personal protective equipment must be worn in designated areas.
