Position Specific Summary

The Survey Instrument Technician position at the City of Tucson’s Department of Transportation & Mobility obtains, processes and analyzes primary field survey data collected from electronic survey equipment and global positioning system equipment.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Land Surveyor. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates transits, levels, theodolites or electronic measuring devices to establish the location of lines and points. Conducts regular maintenance to keep instruments in optimal working condition. Performs operator-level operations. Services, maintains and calibrates mechanical, optical and electronic survey equipment.

  • Conducts surveys, sets up and operates survey equipment. Makes observations, prepares notes of topographical features, as built plans and related information, and interprets maps and specifications. Operates surveying instruments to measure distances, angles, elevations, and other topographical features. Collects field data, including the location of boundary markers, structures, and other features.

  • Obtains measurement data by operating various mechanical, optical and electronic survey instruments and devices. Calculates distances, angles, elevations, and coordinates, to convert measurements between different units and systems, and to ensure the accuracy and precision of survey results. Records a set of field notes, either manually or on electronic equipment. Identifies and resolves technical issues with surveying equipment and data. Analyzes data for accuracy and make necessary adjustments or corrections.

  • Communicates findings, issues, and progress to team members and supervisors. Works closely with surveyors, engineers, and other professionals to understand project requirements and objectives. Assists in the planning and coordination of survey projects.

  • Assists with training new survey crew members in technical aspects of survey operations. Gives instructions to aides to complete a particular task, by using verbal directions, hand signals and by radio.

  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

Indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

6 months post high school

Experience

One (1) year of relevant experience

Equivalency

Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

License/Certifications

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Six (6) months post high school
Experience: One (1) year experience conducting land surveys
License/Certifications: A Valid and unrestricted Driver License with two
(2) years of licensed driving is required
