Position overview
The Senior Director, Smart Operations (GOQ) leads the strategy, architecture, and execution of integrated smart-operation solutions across hardware, software, data, and user experience. This executive leader manages systems and solutions engineering teams that translate business opportunities into scalable products, platforms, and operational capabilities.
The role is accountable for defining system requirements, shaping product experiences and use cases, directing end-to-end development and integration, and enabling continuous delivery of customer value through systems engineering and agile methodologies. The Senior Director also establishes the long-term research and capability strategy required to support next-generation smart operations.
Key responsibilities
Strategy and technology leadership
- Define and execute the multi-year strategy for smart operations systems, solutions engineering, and related research capabilities.
- Identify emerging customer, business, technology, and operational requirements and translate them into a clear product and capability roadmap.
- Shape the architecture and technical direction for integrated hardware and full-stack software solutions across relevant product segments.
- Influence enterprise-level decisions on platforms, standards, tools, partnerships, and investment priorities.
- Guide research and academic collaborations that strengthen future systems and solutions capabilities.
Systems and product development
- Lead teams responsible for systems definition, solution architecture, product specifications, and end-to-end technical execution.
- Translate business opportunities into compelling user experiences, use cases, system requirements, and measurable outcomes.
- Direct the definition of hardware, embedded software, cloud services, applications, data flows, interfaces, security controls, and operational requirements.
- Ensure that solutions are designed for scalability, reliability, maintainability, interoperability, and customer adoption.
- Oversee the integration, validation, deployment, and troubleshooting of complex computer, information, and software systems.
- Establish effective systems engineering practices, technical governance, architecture reviews, and design decision processes.
Delivery and operational excellence
- Enable predictable delivery of product features through agile planning, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and disciplined release management.
- Partner with product management, engineering, operations, security, quality, customer-facing teams, and business stakeholders to resolve cross-functional dependencies.
- Drive root-cause analysis and timely resolution of systemic issues affecting product quality, performance, availability, or user experience.
- Establish and monitor measures for delivery velocity, solution quality, system performance, reliability, customer value, and operational efficiency.
- Promote automation, standardization, reuse, and continuous improvement across the systems and solutions lifecycle.
People and organizational leadership
- Build, lead, and develop a high-performing organization of systems engineers, solutions architects, technical program leaders, and engineering managers.
- Set clear goals, priorities, decision rights, and performance expectations aligned to business and customer outcomes.
- Create an environment of accountability, collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and continuous learning.
- Apply differentiated performance management and succession planning to strengthen organizational capability.
- Develop technical and leadership talent through coaching, mentoring, career development, and targeted capability-building programs.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Advanced degree in a relevant technical or business discipline is preferred.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in systems engineering, solutions architecture, software/hardware development, product engineering, digital transformation, or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering or technology organizations, including managers and senior technical professionals.
- Demonstrated experience delivering integrated hardware and full-stack software systems from concept through deployment and lifecycle operations.
- Strong experience translating business needs into user experiences, use cases, system requirements, product specifications, and technical roadmaps.
- Experience with systems integration, distributed or embedded systems, cloud platforms, data and information systems, APIs, observability, cybersecurity, and production operations.
- Experience applying agile, DevOps, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and modern product development practices.
- Proven record of leading complex, cross-functional programs with significant technical, organizational, and business impact.
- Strong written, verbal, executive communication, influencing, and stakeholder-management skills.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience leading smart manufacturing, intelligent operations, industrial automation, digital engineering, connected products, or enterprise technology transformation.
- Experience spanning operational technology and information technology environments.
- Knowledge of edge computing, IoT, AI/ML-enabled applications, digital twins, robotics, advanced analytics, or other emerging smart-operations technologies.
- Experience defining platform strategies, reference architectures, technology standards, and reusable solution frameworks.
- Experience managing external technology partners, suppliers, research institutions, or academic collaborations.
- Track record of building research-to-product pipelines and converting emerging technologies into business value.
- Experience operating in a global, matrixed, and highly regulated technology environment.
