Software Engineer III
Location: Pune, India (working onsite 3-4 days a week)
Position Summary
As a Software Engineer at HackerOne, you will help build and evolve product capabilities that advance our Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) platform and improve how our Product Security Analysts and security researcher community get their work done. You will work closely with engineers, Product Managers, and Designers, while collaborating with our Pune-based Customer Operations team and global colleagues to turn real customer and user problems into reliable product experiences.
You will own meaningful features and components through the software development lifecycle, contributing across our application stack and continuing to grow your technical expertise. As HackerOne evolves its AI-powered platform, you will also have opportunities to apply and learn AI technologies where they improve customer outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities
Success in the Software Engineer role will be accomplished by delivering on the responsibilities below in alignment with the Values and Principles that define how we work at HackerOne.
Build, test, ship, and maintain highly available, performant, and durable product features for HackerOne’s CTEM platform, with a focus on capabilities that simplify workflows and improve outcomes for Product Security Analysts, security researchers, and customers.
Own meaningful features and components from development through production, working with engineers, Product Managers, and Designers to understand requirements, manage dependencies, make sound technical decisions, and deliver against team goals and roadmap priorities.
Apply First Principles Problem Solving to understand customer and technical problems at their root, break complex challenges into manageable components, and develop simple, maintainable solutions rather than relying on fragile short-term fixes.
Bring an AI Native mindset to engineering by using AI-enabled development tools where they improve quality or productivity and contributing to AI-assisted product capabilities where they create meaningful customer value. Develop your knowledge of technologies such as Python, LangChain, Langfuse, retrieval, and agentic workflows as relevant to the problems you are solving.
Use Data-Driven Decision Making to understand how features and systems are performing, drawing on product data, application telemetry, user feedback, quality measures, and other evidence to validate decisions and guide iteration after launch.
Demonstrate Change Agility as product priorities, customer needs, and technologies evolve, learning new tools and approaches while continuing to deliver reliable software in small, validated iterations.
Contribute to the quality and health of the broader engineering platform through code reviews, testing, observability, documentation, and improvements to reliability, maintainability, and developer experience; participate in cross-squad initiatives when your expertise or team’s work can contribute.
Collaborate openly with engineers across levels and functions, sharing knowledge and supporting the growth and onboarding of less-experienced engineers while continuing to learn from Senior and Staff Engineers.
Minimum Qualifications
5+ years of software development experience, including experience building and delivering production software within a modern SaaS or web application environment.
Proficiency in a dynamically typed, object-oriented programming language such as Ruby, Python, JavaScript, or a similar language, along with practical experience with SQL and relational databases. You should be willing to learn and work with Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL in our environment.
Experience building modern web applications using front-end technologies such as ReactJS or comparable frameworks, along with experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS or similar technologies.
Experience contributing to features or technical projects through multiple stages of the software development lifecycle, including implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on experience with technologies in our application stack, including Ruby on Rails, ReactJS, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, and Amazon Web Services.
Experience building products or workflows for security professionals, analysts, technical operations teams, developers, communities, or other technical users.
Exposure to Python and AI application technologies or patterns such as LangChain, Langfuse, retrieval/RAG, tool use, workflow orchestration, human-in-the-loop systems, or LLM-powered features. We value an ability and willingness to learn these technologies and apply them thoughtfully rather than requiring deep AI specialization.
Experience using AI-enabled development tools or familiarity with evaluating AI-assisted product experiences through feedback, quality measures, monitoring, experimentation, or similar approaches.
