Vultr is seeking a proactive and strategic Senior Tax Analyst – Strategy & Incentives to own and manage our multi-state data center tax credit and incentive strategy across our expanding infrastructure footprint. Reporting directly to the Global Tax Director this role will act as our subject matter expert on state and local data center tax incentives—securing programs directly in-house when appropriate and orchestrating specialized external tax, legal, and economic development advisors for complex multi-jurisdictional negotiations.
This is a high-impact, cross-functional role where your ability to balance internal execution with external advisor management will directly influence Vultr’s expansion velocity, capital efficiency, and tax strategy as we build the next generation of cloud and AI infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Cross-Functional Communication: Act as the primary tax liaison for business initiatives, proactively surfacing tax implications early in contract negotiations, site selection, and operational changes. Translate complex tax regulations into clear, actionable guidance for non-tax stakeholders.
Evaluate state and local data center tax incentive opportunities, exemption programs, and statutory tax credits across current and target deployment locations.
Execute end-to-end incentive applications, tax filings, and sales/use tax exemption registrations directly in-house for standard statutory jurisdictions.
Manage & Orchestrate external tax advisors, legal counsel, and economic development consultants on complex, high-stakes, or specialized discretionary incentive negotiations and site selection engagements.
Model tax savings, capital expenditure thresholds, and return-on-investment (ROI) to evaluate site selection trade-offs in direct partnership with Real Estate, Infrastructure, and Legal teams.
Maintain ongoing compliance lifecycle management for all secured incentives, ensuring data center CapEx, power utilization, and job creation commitments are tracked to prevent clawbacks.
Compliance Control Management: Maintain strong internal controls, including reconciliations, to ensure data integrity across tax-related processes and support recurring audits.
Administer sales and use tax exemption certificates and direct-pay permits for qualifying server, storage, GPU, cooling, and power equipment purchases.
Monitor legislative developments, state statutory data center incentive changes, and green energy tax trends to keep the Global Tax Director informed of emerging risks and opportunities.
Qualifications
5+ years of progressive experience in US State & Local Tax (SALT), specializing in location incentives, indirect tax exemptions, or corporate state tax planning.
CPA or JD preferred
Direct Experience with state data center incentive frameworks, sales/use tax equipment exemptions, and property tax abatement.
State or Local Government Experience Preferred: Prior experience working within a State Department of Revenue, State Economic Development Agency, or local taxing authority is a strong plus.
Proven experience managing external service providers, law firms, or accounting consultancy teams to drive clear project milestones and budget efficiency.
Advanced financial modeling skills with the ability to turn complex state tax regulations into clear financial projections for non-tax stakeholders.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field.
Compensation
$100,000 – $120,000
Final compensation will vary depending on years of experience, background/skill set, location, and applicable laws.
